Land in Hanoi and check into a hostel or budget hotel in the Old Quarter (Hanoi is the cheapest place on this trip to sleep — splurge here so you can de-splurge in the mountains). Spend the afternoon walking the Hoàn Kiếm lake loop, drinking egg coffee, and sorting logistics: pick up your Sapa sleeper-train ticket from a local travel agent (Vietnam Railways' own site is clunky — agencies on Hàng Bạc sell the same seats for a £1-2 commission), and confirm a two-day trek with a Sapa-based operator. Eat bún chả or phở bò for dinner on a plastic stool. Grab a SIM with data (Viettel, ~£8 for 30 days) so you can book homestays on the fly.

Spend a relaxed day in Hanoi — this is where you save vs. the group tour, which starts with an early-morning mountain transfer. Visit the Temple of Literature and the Hỏa Lò Prison museum, or day-trip out to the Pottery Village of Bát Tràng if you have time. In the evening head to Hà Nội railway station and board the sleeper to Lào Cai. Book a soft-sleeper 4-berth cabin (same as the operator uses) — solo travellers usually buy a single berth in a shared cabin, which is the cheapest and most sociable option. Bring earplugs and your own snacks; cabin sales are fine but overpriced.

Arrive in Lào Cai around 5–6am, then take the shared minibus up the mountain road to Sa Pa (about an hour, ~£3 — the same van the tours use). Drop your bag at a guesthouse, then do the classic first trek down to Cat Cat village: a short, steep 6km loop through Hmong homes, terraced plots, and the giant wooden water wheels used to husk rice. It's an easy warm-up and the craft shops are a good place to watch weavers at work. Afternoon light is lovely on the terraces. If your knees and schedule allow, walk back up, or grab a xe om (motorbike taxi) for ~£2.

Today is the big one — the 15km descent into the Mường Hoa valley to Tả Van. You can walk it independently (the path is well-trodden and signed enough to follow with Maps.me offline), but for peace of mind and local income, a Hmong guide costs roughly £18–25 per day and pays for itself in village access and storytelling. The route drops past Y Linh Hồ, Lao Chải and the terraced slopes, then follows the river into Tả Van. Your hosts will cook a shared dinner in the evening — expect mountain greens, free-range chicken, and rice wine. Homestays in Tả Van go for around £10–14 per person, often including dinner and breakfast.

Early breakfast with your hosts, then trek the final stretch to Giang Ta Chai, crossing the Mường Hoa river and passing bamboo groves and a small waterfall. Count on 3–4 hours of walking and a slippery river crossing — bring grip. Arrive back in Sa Pa in late afternoon, shower and grab lunch (rural food is cheap; ~£3 for a bowl of phở). In the evening board the sleeper train back down to Hà Nội — buy your return berth from the same Lào Cai ticket office or a Sa Pa agent, and if you're short on cash, the hard-sleeper option is ~£15 versus ~£22 for soft. Alternatively, an overnight Express sleeper bus Sa Pa → Hanoi runs for about £12 and is slightly faster.

The train arrives at Hà Nội station in the early morning. Walk or Grab back to your original hostel (most will hold bags for free), grab bánh mì and cà phê sữa đá, and either fly home or continue north/south — this is a great jumping-off point for Hà Giang, Ninh Bình, or the onward route to Huế on the Reunification Express. If you booked the sleeper bus instead of the train, you'll arrive slightly later, around 7am; a hostel day-room is ~£8 if you need a shower before your flight.
