Scotland's Shetland Islands — Self-Launched Version

Travel to Shetland however suits your budget: Loganair flies Aberdeen (ABZ) to Sumburgh (LSI) in about 1h10m (book early, roughly £80-140 return), or take the NorthLink Ferries overnight sailing from Aberdeen to Lerwick (14.5 hours, from about £35-60 foot passenger each way, reclining seats free or add a berth). Settle into your Lerwick accommodation, then spend the afternoon wandering the harbour and the winding flagstone lanes of Commercial Street. Grab dinner at a local pub — The Lounge or The Queens Hotel both do solid, affordable bar meals.

Take the local bus south to Sumburgh (ZetTrans service 6, about £4 and 50 minutes). Walk the clifftop path to Sumburgh Head Lighthouse and RSPB reserve — puffins and seabirds in spring and early summer. Then follow the coastal path to Jarlshof, one of Europe's most remarkable archaeological sites, with Bronze Age, Iron Age, Norse and medieval remains layered together (entry about £7-8, book or pay on arrival via Historic Environment Scotland). Return to Lerwick on the afternoon bus. Evening: waterfront stroll and dinner at a local eatery.

A gentler day in town. Start at the Shetland Museum and Archives on the waterfront — free entry, excellent on local history, textiles, fishing and Shetland dialect. Join a free or low-cost guided walk if one is running, or follow the Lerwick Heritage Trail signs yourself. In the afternoon, walk out to Clickimin Broch or take a short bus hop to Scalloway to see its castle and the Shetland Bus memorial. Optional evening: tour and tasting at Lerwick Brewery (~£12-15, book ahead).

Shetland's northernmost headland. Take the early bus north to Toft, then the inter-island ferry to Yell and on to Unst (ZetTrans buses and ferries — foot passenger ferries are cheap, roughly £3-8 per leg, and the whole one-way journey takes about 3-3.5 hours). From Baltasound, walk or arrange a local taxi to Hermaness National Nature Reserve. The self-guided clifftop trail to the Muckle Flugga viewpoint is about 3-4 hours return — dramatic sea cliffs, gannets, bonxies (great skuas) and puffins. This is a long day; check return bus times carefully, or overnight at a Baltasound hostel to break it up.

Head north-west by bus to Eshaness (ZetTrans service 21 or 8 to Hillswick/Eshaness, roughly £4-5 and about 1h30m). The Eshaness cliffs are among the finest coastal scenery in Britain — volcanic rock formations, geos, sea stacks and blowholes, with an easy-to-follow cliff path of 2-4 hours depending on how far you go. Drop into the Dr Ronas Stone or the Braewick Cafe for lunch. Return to Lerwick on the afternoon bus and finish with a group-style supper at a local eatery, or cook in the hostel kitchen to keep costs down.

Note: if you have an evening ferry or late flight, most Lerwick guesthouses and the hostel will hold bags free or for a small fee.
