A 4-day, 3-night self-launched version of Much Better Adventures' guided weekend in Slovak Paradise National Park. Base yourself in the medieval UNESCO town of Levoča and hike the park's legendary gorge routes — Suchá Belá, Prielom Hornádu and Piecky — using the park's network of metal ladders, wooden catwalks and hanging bridges. Slovakia's national park trail system is fully open to independent hikers with a cheap park entry ticket, so no guide is needed. Travel to Levoča via Poprad-Tatry (cheap flights from the UK) or Krakow, both reachable by public bus/train. Costs are approximate backpacker/budget rates in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Levoča

Levoča, Slovakia

Make your own way to Levoča. Best budget route: fly to Poprad-Tatry (TAT) from the UK (Ryanair/Wizz, often £20-50 one way) and take a 30-40 min taxi or local bus to Levoča (taxi approx €15-25; bus via SAD Spišská Nová Ves cheaper but slower). Alternative: fly to Kraków (KRK), take the 17-min train to Kraków Główny (£1-2), then a FlixBus/RegioJet to Poprad (~3.5 hrs, £8-12) and onward bus/train to Levoča (~£2). Check into a hostel or pension in the old town square. Spend the late afternoon wandering Levoča's UNESCO-listed medieval walls and St James's Church (home to the world's tallest wooden altar). Grab dinner — try bryndzové halušky (potato dumplings with sheep cheese), £6-9.

🚌Flight to Poprad-Tatry or Kraków + local bus/train/taxi to Levoča (~£2-25 depending on route)

Two Canyons: Suchá Belá & Prielom Hornádu

Slovak Paradise National Park (Hrabušice / Podlesok entrance)

Take a morning bus or shared taxi from Levoča to Podlesok/Hrabušice (park gateway, ~30 min, £2-3). Buy your park entry at the entrance (€3-4 per person, valid per day). Hike the bottom of Suchá Belá Gorge — one of the longest and most popular canyons — wading through water, scrambling over fallen trees and climbing metal ladders with chains and footholds, including the famous 'window in the rock'. Exit the canyon and stop for lunch at Kláštorisko mountain hut (soup, sausage, beer, £6-9). Continue through Prielom Hornádu gorge with its ledges and catwalks above the Hornád River. Route approx 17km, 6-7 hrs, 520m up (Level 3 moderate — good fitness, comfortable with heights). Return to Levoča; dinner at a local pub (£7-10).

Bring a packed lunch from a Levoča supermarket (bread, cheese, salami, fruit — £4-6). In the evening head to the thermal pools (e.g. Spišská Nová Ves or Vrbov) for an evening soak — entrance £6-10, quiet and cheap in the evening. Dinner back in town (£7-10).

Frequently asked questions

How much does Adventure Hiking in Slovakia in a Weekend — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £355 per person for 4 days in Slovak Paradise National Park & Levoča, Slovakia. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Much Better Adventures?+

Yes — Much Better Adventures charges around £600 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £355 — a saving of roughly £245 (41%) per person.

How long is the Slovak Paradise National Park & Levoča, Slovakia trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Slovak Paradise National Park & Levoča, Slovakia.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, hiking, culture trip through Slovak Paradise National Park & Levoča, Slovakia, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
