South Africa, Eswatini & Lesotho — Self-Launched 20-Day Overland

South Africa, Eswatini & Lesotho — Self-Launched 20-Day Overland

20 days · South Africa & Eswatini & Lesotho

On The Go Tours charges £1,900

£400saved per person (21%)

No-markup version: ~£1,500 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of On The Go Tours' 20-day Pretoria-to-Cape Town overland trip, done independently with Baz Bus, intercity coaches, minibus taxis and self-booked game drives. You'll cover the Panorama Route and Kruger, Eswatini's Mlilwane Sanctuary, St Lucia's hippo lagoon, Durban and the Drakensberg, a 4x4 day trip up Sani Pass into Lesotho, Malealea's pony trails, the Eastern Cape parks (Mountain Zebra and Addo), the Garden Route, the Cango Caves, Cape Agulhas and the Winelands before finishing under Table Mountain. Costs are backpacker/budget-hotel estimates in GBP and assume shared dorm or budget double rooms, self-catering where possible, and public transport — with a couple of splurge activities (game drives, Sani Pass 4x4) that you genuinely can't do cheaply another way. Joining a handful of day tours (Kruger, Sani Pass, Addo) keeps you in small groups without paying for a full guided expedition.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Pretoria to Hazyview via the Panorama Route

Pretoria / Hazyview

Start early in Pretoria and take a shuttle or intercity bus (Intercape/Greyhound-style coach, or a shared shuttle booked via your hostel) east to Nelspruit/Mbombela — roughly 4.5 hours, £18–25. From Nelspruit pick up a minibus taxi or a pre-booked budget shuttle to Hazyview (£8–12). If you have your own wheels or hire a car for this leg, drive the Panorama Route yourself: Blyde River Canyon viewpoints (Bourke's Luck Potholes, God's Window, Three Rondavels) are R30–R60 each. Overnight in a Hazyview backpackers — dorm beds run £12–18. Self-cater or grab a braai dinner at the hostel.

A hostel-arranged sunset drive in a SANParks vehicle costs ~£25–35 extra. Do morning and afternoon loops along the Sabie and Skukuza roads — Big Five sightings are realistic but never guaranteed. Pack your own lunch and plenty of water.

In the evening, join a SANParks night drive from a camp like Skukuza or Pretoriuskop (~£25–35), which is the best value way to see nocturnal wildlife. Back to Hazyview for the night.

From Manzini take a local kombi to Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary (£3–5). Mlilwane is Eswatini's oldest reserve and you can walk and cycle freely among zebra, wildebeest and warthog. Book a St Lucia backpackers dorm (£12–16). In the late afternoon, join a two-hour boat cruise on the St Lucia estuary (~£18–22 direct with operators like ShakaBarker or Advantage Tours) — hippos, crocodiles and prolific birdlife are near-guaranteed.

You cannot drive this road in a normal car — a guided 4x4 is the only sensible option. Bring a passport, warm layers (the top sits at 2,874 m) and cash for the border and village crafts. Back in Underberg for dinner.

Stop at Rorke's Drift and Isandlwana — a local battlefield guide at Rorke's Drift museum charges around £10–15 for a 90-minute tour that's genuinely worth it. Royal Natal National Park

A full day of hiking in Royal Natal National Park (entry ~£4): the Tugela Falls / Amphitheatre chain ladders route is a long day, or keep it easier with the Cascades and Tiger Falls trails. Free trails if you hike independently; a local guide costs ~£20–30 if you want one. This is one of the best-value hiking days of the whole trip — pack lunch and plenty of water.

Overnight in Cradock (£18–25 guesthouse) and self-cater. If you're on a tight budget, the Cradock backpackers and B&Bs are a better bet than the SANParks camp, though the park's rest camp chalets are good value if you're splitting a room.

Hike the first stretch of the Otter Trail or the free-ish Storms River Mouth boardwalks (park entry ~£10-12) — suspension bridges over the river mouth are spectacular. Continue to Plettenberg Bay for the night (£16–20 dorm or budget guesthouse). Optional thrill: bungee jump off Bloukrans Bridge (~£70) — the world's highest commercial bridge bungee.

Continue to Hermanus (total driving 5–6 hours — a hired car for the last two days makes this far simpler than public transport, and can be split between 2–3 travellers). Overnight in Hermanus (£20–28 budget guesthouse). Late September–November is peak whale season, and the cliff path is free to walk.

🚌Hired car or shuttle Oudtshoorn–Agulhas–Hermanus (~£30, or ~£15 shared)

🛏Hermanus budget guesthouse or backpackers (~£22/night)

  • →Cape Agulhas southernmost tip

Frequently asked questions

How much does South Africa, Eswatini & Lesotho — Self-Launched 20-Day Overland cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,500 per person for 20 days in South Africa & Eswatini & Lesotho. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with On The Go Tours?+

Yes — On The Go Tours charges around £1,900 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,500 — a saving of roughly £400 (21%) per person.

How long is the South Africa & Eswatini & Lesotho trip?+

This itinerary runs 20 days, covering 20 day-by-day stops through South Africa & Eswatini & Lesotho.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, hiking trip through South Africa & Eswatini & Lesotho, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
