A self-launched 17-day run of the classic Rainbow Route — Johannesburg to Cape Town via Kruger, Eswatini, Hluhluwe, the Drakensberg, the Wild Coast, Addo, Knysna and Hermanus. You'll use budget backpacker shuttles, the Baz Bus, domestic flights and a couple of shared game-drive seats instead of a guided overland truck, booking lodges, hostels and national park rest camps direct. Expect big-five game drives, Zulu and Swazi culture, spectacular mountain hiking, whale-watching coastline and Table Mountain, at roughly a third of the guided tour price.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Johannesburg — prep & Kruger overnight bus

Johannesburg

Fly into OR Tambo, grab a local SIM (Vodacom/Vodacom airtime ~£5) and pick up a Gautrain card. Base yourself in Rosebank or Melville rather than Rivonia — an Airbnb dorm or hostel like Curiocity Backpackers (~£18). Use the afternoon to buy a Kombi/Baz Bus pass and stock up on snacks for the long haul. Some travellers fly directly to Nelspruit/KMIA (~£45 one-way) to save the overnight leg, but the budget move is the Intercape or Greyhound overnight coach to Nelspruit, departing ~19:00 and arriving ~05:30.

🚌Gautrain airport-to-city ~£8; overnight Intercape/Greyhound coach to Nelspruit ~£25

🛏Curiocity Backpackers or a Rosebank hostel dorm (~£18)

  • →Orient in Johannesburg (Maboneng or Rosebank)
  • →Buy SIM card and travel essentials
  • →Optional: Apartheid Museum (~£7)
~£55
Day 2

Kruger via Nelspruit — first game drive

Kruger National Park

From Nelspruit take a shared shuttle or the Kruger Shalati/Skukuza transfer to one of the park's budget rest camps (Skukuza, Berg-en-Dal or Pretoriuskop), booked direct through SANParks (~£25-£35 per person in a self-catering rondavel or safari tent). Book a sunset drive with SANParks that evening (~£18) or a night drive (~£22) — these are run by the park, not a private operator, and are superb value. Self-cater from the camp shop or eat at the camp restaurant.

🛏SANParks rest camp rondavel or safari tent (~£30 per person)

  • →SANParks sunset game drive (~£18)

Full day in Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park

The Big Five day. Either book a SANParks morning walk (~£30) or, more cheaply, split a guided game drive with other travellers from your camp notice board (~£35 each in a shared open 4x4) covering the southern circuit — Sabie River, Lower Sabie and the N'waswitshaka area. If you have a car, self-driving the tar roads is free beyond park entry (~£22/day conservation fee and ~£22/day park fee for international visitors). Afternoon siesta at the camp pool, then a second sunset drive.

Malolotja Nature Reserve, Eswatini

Head south via the Jeppe's Reef/Matsamo border to Eswatini (visa-free for UK passports, no fee). Shared taxis and minibus Kombis run from Mbabane to the Malolotja turn-off; from there it's a short hitch or negotiated ride to Malolotja's budget self-catering lodge or the nearby Hawane area. Malolotja has marked hiking trails — the Malolotja Falls and the canopy-tour zipline (~£35, book direct with Malolotja Canopy Tour). Evening braai under huge Swazi skies.

St Lucia is the activity hub: book a Hluhluwe-iMfolozi half-day game drive through your hostel (~£40) — Hluhluwe is the best place in Africa to see white rhino. In the evening join a Zulu cultural village experience (Khula Village or DumaZulu, ~£25) run by community operators rather than a tour company.

The southern Berg (Sani Pass area) is the classic hiking base; Lotheni and Giant's Castle lie further north if you prefer.

Alternatively, hike to the Bushman rock paintings in Giant's Castle or Kamberg (SANParks permit ~£3, plus a guide ~£10), some of the finest San art in southern Africa. You set the pace instead of following a convoy.

Book a SANParks safari tent or rondavel direct (~£35) or a nearby guesthouse (~£25). Addo is famous for its dense elephant herds plus lion, buffalo and the reintroduced rhino. Frequently asked questions

How much does South Africa Rainbow Route (Self-Launched Edition) cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,295 per person for 17 days in South Africa. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Sunway Safaris?+

Yes — Sunway Safaris charges around £2,660 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,295 — a saving of roughly £1,365 (51%) per person.

How long is the South Africa trip?+

This itinerary runs 17 days, covering 17 day-by-day stops through South Africa.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, hiking trip through South Africa, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
