Bravo Indochina Tours charges £1,250

£745saved per person (60%)

No-markup version: ~£505 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A DIY version of Bravo Indochina Tours' 8-day Cultural Sri Lanka circuit (Negombo → Anuradhapura → Polonnaruwa → Sigiriya → Dambulla → Kandy → Colombo), built on Sri Lanka's excellent and cheap public transport: intercity buses, the Colombo–Anuradhapura train, and local buses between the Cultural Triangle sites. You'll stay in guesthouses and budget hotels, hire local tuk-tuk drivers and site guides on the spot, and book Sigiriya/Dambulla tickets directly. Same ruins, rock fortresses, cave temples and dance shows — roughly half the price of the packaged tour. All costs are approximate per person and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrival in Negombo

Negombo

Land at Bandaranaike International Airport and take the local bus or a tuk-tuk the 20–30 minutes to Negombo (bus ~£0.30, tuk-tuk ~£4). Check into a guesthouse in the Lewis Place / Porutota Road strip. Spend the afternoon on Negombo's wide beach and walk the lagoon-side fish market and Dutch-era canal. Eat your first rice-and-curry or devilled prawns at a beachside café. Buy a Dialog/Mobitel tourist SIM at the airport (~£3–4 for data) — it makes booking buses and tuk-tuks far easier.

  • →Negombo beach walk
  • →Negombo fish market & lagoon

Day 2

Negombo to Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura

Optional early start: boat trip on Muthurajawela Marsh for birdwatching (arrange locally, ~£12–15 for a shared boat and guide) or a dawn visit to the fish market. Then head to Anuradhapura — the easiest route is a tuk-tuk/bus to Negombo or Colombo Fort, then the intercity bus or train north (~4–5 hours, bus ~£2.50, 2nd-class train ~£1.50). Alternatively take a direct Negombo–Anuradhapura bus. Settle into a guesthouse near the sacred city and take a slow evening walk around Nuwarawewa tank. Rent a bicycle (~£2/day) for tomorrow — it's the classic way to cover the ruins.

In the afternoon take a local bus 13 km east to Mihintale (~£0.30) and climb the 1,840 steps to the peak for the Maha Stupa and Aradhana Gala views over the jungle plain. Tuk-tuk back, or catch the last bus if you time it right. Evening thali-style rice and curry at a local restaurant.

Climb the ~1,200 steps through the water gardens, mirror wall and frescoes to the palace ruins and summit views. Come down for a late breakfast, then arrange a village experience in Hiriwadunna: tuk-tuk or jeep out to the village, a catamaran ride on the lake, a walk through paddy fields and a home-cooked village lunch — easiest booked through your guesthouse or Hiriwadunna village tours (~£15, similar to the tour's included rural visit). From Dambulla take a direct bus to Kandy (~2.5 hrs, ~£1.70) or the cheaper train option from Matale. In Kandy, check in near the lake, walk around Kandy Lake and the downtown market, then buy a ticket for the Kandyan cultural dance show (~£4–5, performances around 5pm at the Kandy Lake Club). Finish at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic for the evening puja ceremony (ticket ~£8).

Check into a hostel or budget hotel in Colombo 03 (Kollupitiya) or Fort, then eat street food — kottu roti or hoppers — at Galle Face Green.

Most of the walking is free; a GetYourGuide Colombo walking tour (~£15) is a good swap for the operator's city guide if you want context. Airport bus #187 from Colombo Fort (~£0.60, ~1 hr) or a taxi (~£15) gets you back to Bandaranaike for departure.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Cultural Sri Lanka 8 Days — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £505 per person for 8 days in Sri Lanka. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Bravo Indochina Tours?+

Yes — Bravo Indochina Tours charges around £1,250 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £505 — a saving of roughly £745 (60%) per person.

How long is the Sri Lanka trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Sri Lanka.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, adventure, budget trip through Sri Lanka, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
