You'll swap group tour markups for locally booked guesthouses, public trains and buses, and self-bookable activities via GetYourGuide or direct. Expect the same iconic highlights — Lion Rock Fortress, the Kandy–Ella scenic train, Pekoe Trail hike, Udawalawe safari and Hiriketiya beach — at a fraction of the cost. All prices are approximate estimates per person.

Check into your guesthouse, then spend the afternoon strolling the seafront promenade or renting a bicycle from your guesthouse (~£2/day) to explore the Dutch canal network and surrounding countryside. In the evening, head to the beach strip for a casual dinner at one of the many local seafood restaurants — try a plate of fresh prawn curry for under £3.
