Highlights of Sri Lanka + Maldives Dhoni Cruise — Self-Launched

14 days · Sri Lanka & Maldives

Explore! charges £3,650

£1,907saved per person (52%)

No-markup version: ~£1,743 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of Explore!'s 14-day Sri Lanka + Maldives dhoni cruise: ancient cities and wildlife in Sri Lanka, then a locally-booked dhoni liveaboard through the Maldives' less-visited atolls. You'll book the Sri Lanka leg independently using local buses, trains and tuk-tuks, budget guesthouses and the same park permits and site tickets the group tour uses, then swap the operator's charter boat for a small locally-run dhoni cruise departing from Malé — same islands, same reefs, a fraction of the price. Costs are approximate budget-backpacker estimates in GBP per person, excluding international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Negombo — beach and seafood

Negombo

Land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) and take a tuk-tuk or local bus the 20 minutes to Negombo. Settle into a guesthouse in the Lewis Place / Porutota Road area, a short walk from the beach. Spend the afternoon on Negombo Beach, then eat at one of the cheap beachfront seafood shacks for a first taste of Sri Lanka. Buy a local SIM (Dialog or Mobitel, ~£3–5 for data) and pick up a tuk-tuk driver's number for the morning.

Day 2

Negombo to Anuradhapura via Wilpattu safari

Anuradhapura

Take an early local bus or intercity bus to Puttalam / Nochchiyagama, or a shared taxi if you want to save hours — this is the awkward leg without a private vehicle. Base yourself near Wilpattu National Park for a shared jeep safari (book via your guesthouse or GetYourGuide, ~£40–55 per person for a half-day shared jeep incl. park entry). Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's classic leopard-and-sloth-bear park, though sightings are never guaranteed. Continue to Anuradhapura in the evening — the bus from Puttalam takes about 1.5 hours.

🚌Local/intercity bus Negombo–Puttalam–Anuradhapura (~£4 total); shared safari jeep

Mihintale, Dambulla caves and village lunch

Sigiriya / Dambulla

Cycle or tuk-tuk to the Anuradhapura sacred city in the morning (site ticket ~£20, valid for the whole complex) or head straight for Mihintale for the 1,840 steps to the summit stupas. Then take a local bus to Dambulla (~2 hours, ~£2) and climb the Dambulla Cave Temples (~£6 entry). Book a village cooking-class/traditional rice-and-curry lunch in Hiriwaduna through your guesthouse or GetYourGuide (~£10–15). Base yourself in Dambulla or Sigiriya for two nights.

Day 4

Sigiriya Rock at dawn, then on to Kandy

Kandy

Get to Sigiriya Rock for opening at 7am to beat both the heat and the tour buses (ticket ~£21). Allow 2–3 hours for the climb and the water gardens. Back for breakfast, then take the local bus to Kandy (3–4 hours, ~£3), or splurge on a tuk-tuk to Habarana for the more comfortable bus. In Kandy, visit the Temple of the Tooth (~£6) for the evening puja, and optionally tuk-tuk out to Peradeniya Botanical Gardens (~£2 entry + ~£4 round-trip tuk-tuk).

Day 5

Kandy to Koggala via the tea country

Koggala / Ahangama

This is the long transfer day. Catch the classic Kandy–Ella train or the Kandy–Badulla bus, stopping at a tea factory near Haputale or Ella for a free-to-£3 tour and tasting (Pedro Tea Estate or similar, walkable from the railway). From Ella/Badulla take the bus down to Matara (~4 hours) and a tuk-tuk to Koggala. It's a big day — leave early. Alternatively, book a direct Kandy–Matara express bus (~6 hours, ~£4).

🚌Train/bus Kandy–Ella/Badulla (~£2–4) + bus to Matara (~£3) + tuk-tuk

🛏Beach guesthouse, Koggala/Ahangama (~£20/night)

Day 6

Galle Fort and the south coast

Koggala / Galle

A slow day. Tuk-tuk to Galle Fort (~£3), walk the ramparts, browse the boutiques and cafés, and catch sunset from the lighthouse. Back at Koggala, the beach at Ahangama or Unawatuna is an easy afternoon. Optional extras: an Ayurvedic massage (~£15–25), a stilt-fisherman photo stop, or — if you're travelling December to April — a whale-watching boat from Mirissa (~£25–35) booked through your guesthouse.

🚌Tuk-tuk to Galle and back (~£6)

🛏Beach guesthouse, Koggala/Ahangama (~£20/night)

  • →Galle Fort ramparts walk
  • →Boutique shopping and cafés
  • →Optional whale watching (Dec–Apr) or Ayurvedic massage

Day 7

Fly to Malé and walk the capital

Malé

Tuk-tuk or bus to Colombo (or direct to the airport) and fly Colombo–Malé — book a low-cost carrier such as SriLankan or Flydubai/Gulf Air connections in advance; one-ways often run £60–120 if booked early. On arrival, take the airport ferry or bus to Malé (~£1–2). Do a self-guided walking loop of the old town: the Grand Friday Mosque, the fish market and the waterfront. Overnight in a budget hotel in Hulhumalé or Malé — this is your departure point for the dhoni cruise tomorrow.

🚌Bus/tuk-tuk to Colombo airport (~£4); flight Colombo–Malé (~£80–120); airport ferry (~£2)

🛏Budget hotel, Hulhumalé or Malé (~£40/night)

  • →Self-guided Malé walking tour: Grand Friday Mosque, fish market, waterfront

~£145
Day 8

Board the dhoni — South Malé and Vaavu Atoll

Vaavu Atoll

Join a locally-run dhoni liveaboard departing Malé (book direct with a Maldivian operator or via GetYourGuide/booking platforms — 7-night cruises typically run £900–1,300 per person full board, versus £2,000+ on operator charters). Sail south through South Malé Atoll into Vaavu (Felidhoo) Atoll. Snorkel the house reefs off Kudhiboli and Kuda Anbaraa, both known for grey reef sharks and healthy coral. Sleep on deck or in a simple twin cabin; all meals are cooked on board.

🚌Dhoni sailing vessel

🛏Dhoni liveaboard cabin, full board (included in cruise price)

  • →Dhoni cruise South Malé Atoll → Vaavu Atoll
  • →Reef snorkelling at Kudhiboli and Kuda Anbaraa
  • →Sunset on deck
~£190
Day 9

Vaavu to Meemu Atoll — sandbank barbecue

Meemu Atoll

A longer sail down to Meemu Atoll, the least-visited of the central atolls. Spend the afternoon on the sandbank at Fenboa Finolhu, snorkelling the drop-off and swimming in water so clear it feels unreal. In the evening the crew usually sets up a barbecue on the beach — grilled reef fish, rice and salad under the stars, the standout memory of most travellers' Maldives leg.

🚌Dhoni sailing vessel

🛏Dhoni liveaboard cabin, full board (included in cruise price)

  • →Dhoni cruise to Meemu Atoll
  • →Snorkelling at Fenboa Finolhu sandbank
  • →Beach barbecue dinner
~£190
Day 10

Dhiggaru reef and island village

Meemu Atoll

Morning snorkel on Dhiggaru reef — sharks, turtles and big schools of fusiliers are common. Then go ashore on the inhabited island of Dhiggaru for a wander and, if it's a Friday or a festival evening, you may catch a Bodu Beru drumming performance. Otherwise ask your crew to arrange one — many village groups will perform for a small donation (~£15–20 shared between the group).

🚌Dhoni sailing vessel

🛏Dhoni liveaboard cabin, full board (included in cruise price)

  • →Snorkelling Dhiggaru reef
  • →Inhabited-island visit: Dhiggaru village
  • →Bodu Beru drumming performance (arrange with crew)
~£195
Day 11

Meemu to Felidhoo Atoll

Felidhoo Atoll

Sail north to Felidhoo, capital of Vaavu Atoll. Walk the sandy streets of Felidhoo village — no cars, just bicycles and shaded lanes — and see how Maldivian island life actually works away from the resorts. Many dhoni crews arrange a second Bodu Beru evening here with local musicians; if not, a sunset on the harbour is reason enough.

🛏Dhoni liveaboard cabin, full board (included in cruise price)

  • →Dhoni cruise to Felidhoo Atoll
  • →Felidhoo village walk
  • →Evening drumming or harbour sunset
~£190
Day 12

Fulidhoo and Hulhidhoo islands

Felidhoo Atoll

The best snorkelling day of the trip for many people. Fulidhoo has a superb reef and a friendly local guesthouse scene if you'd like to break the cruise up. Hulhidhoo is a tiny uninhabited island with a sandbar good for swimming. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and don't stand on the coral.

🚌Dhoni sailing vessel

🛏Dhoni liveaboard cabin, full board (included in cruise price)

  • →Fulidhoo Island visit
  • →Hulhidhoo sandbar swim
  • →Reef snorkelling
~£190
Day 13

Felidhoo back to Malé

Malé / Hulhumalé

Final snorkel and swim stop en route north, then the sail back towards Malé. A farewell dinner with the boat crew on the last night is the standard arrangement on these cruises — tip around £30–40 per person across the crew (it's expected and much appreciated). Disembark early the following morning; many travellers book one extra night ashore in Hulhumalé to avoid a same-day flight.

🚌Dhoni sailing vessel

🛏Dhoni liveaboard cabin (or budget hotel in Hulhumalé if extending, ~£40)

  • →Final snorkelling and swimming stop
  • →Farewell dinner with the crew
~£200
Day 14

Depart Malé

Malé

Breakfast, disembark and take the ferry or public bus to Velana International Airport. If your flight is late, Hulhumalé's artificial beach and Eastern Beach cafés are a pleasant way to spend a few hours. Public speedboat ferries run from Malé to other islands if you want to extend your trip independently.

🚌Public ferry/bus to airport (~£2)

🛏—

  • →Transfer to Velana International Airport
  • →Optional Hulhumalé beach stop
~£10

Frequently asked questions

How much does Highlights of Sri Lanka + Maldives Dhoni Cruise — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,743 per person for 14 days in Sri Lanka & Maldives. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Explore!?+

Yes — Explore! charges around £3,650 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,743 — a saving of roughly £1,907 (52%) per person.

How long is the Sri Lanka & Maldives trip?+

This itinerary runs 14 days, covering 14 day-by-day stops through Sri Lanka & Maldives.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, beaches trip through Sri Lanka & Maldives, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
