Sri Lanka & Maldives Adventure — Self-Launched

14 days · Sri Lanka & Maldives

G Adventures charges £3,219

£2,039saved per person (63%)

No-markup version: ~£1,180 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A DIY version of the 14-day Negombo-to-Malé group tour: Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle fringe, hill country tea estates and Ella, an Udawalawe elephant safari, Galle's fort and Unawatuna's beach, then a local-island and snorkelling stint in the Maldives' South Malé and Felidhu atolls. You book the same guesthouses and hotels directly, take the famous hill-country train, and join shared jeep safaris and snorkelling trips instead of a guided group — for roughly a third of the operator's price. Costs are approximate per person and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Negombo — beach strip and lagoon

Negombo

Land at Bandaranaike International (CMB), buy a local SIM at the airport (Dialog/Mobitel tourist SIM ~£8 for 15GB), then take a tuk-tuk or the cheap local bus 240 (~£0.40) 20 minutes to Negombo. Book a guesthouse in the Beach Corridor / Lewis Place area — plenty of sea-view doubles for £18-25. Afternoon walk on Negombo Beach, sunset at the lagoon or a fish-market wander, then a rice-and-curry dinner at a local eatery (£3-4).

En route, stop off at a roadside spice garden near Matale (Matale Spice Gardens, self-guided walk free, or pay ~£3 for a guided walk with a tip) — the same experience the tour includes. Afternoon: Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (£3 entry, shoulder-and-knee covering needed). Evening optional Kandyan cultural dance show at the Kandy Lake Club (~£3-5).

The classic: reserve a 2nd-class seat on the Kandy-Ella train (book on the Sri Lanka Railways e-seat site ~10-30 days out, ~£1.50-3; unreserved 3rd class is fine but crowded). The Badulla line through Nuwara Eliya's tea country is the highlight of the trip — sit on the left, hang out the door politely, buy short eats from platform vendors. ~6-7 hrs. Arrive Ella, check into a hillside guesthouse near Amba Estate direction (~£18). Sunset from Little Adam's Peak viewpoint if you still have legs.

Or do a shorter tea factory tour in Demodara. Hike to Ella Rock (self-guided, ~4-5 hrs, no fee — ignore unofficial 'guides' demanding money) or the gentler Little Adam's Peak path. Late afternoon: afternoon homestyle Sri Lankan cooking demo at a guesthouse in Ella (~£12-15 including dinner) — dhal, coconut sambol, hoppers.

Book a shared afternoon jeep safari (bookable via GetYourGuide/Klook or directly at your guesthouse, £25-35 per person including park entry ~£12 in a shared 6-seat jeep). Udawalawe is the most reliable park for wild elephants — expect herds, peacocks and eagles.

🛏Guesthouse near Udawalawe park entrance (~£20)

  • →Udawalawe National Park shared jeep safari

Udawalawe to Unawatuna via Galle Fort

Unawatuna / Galle

Drop bags and walk the Galle Fort ramparts in the late afternoon — free to wander, lighthouse and Dutch Reformed Church, sunset from the fort walls. Optional: Galle Fort walking tour if you want context (~£10 on GetYourGuide), or DIY with a map. Beach-shack dinner on Unawatuna's crescent bay (£5-7).

🚌Bus Udawalawe-Galle (~£1.50) + local bus/tuk-tuk to Unawatuna (~£1)

Day 8

Unawatuna beach morning, fly to Malé

Malé / South Malé Atoll

Morning swim and breakfast, then bus/tuk-tuk to Colombo Fort or direct expressway bus to Bandaranaike Airport (~2 hrs, ~£2). Fly Colombo (CMB) to Malé (MLE) — usually the day's main cost; bargain carriers and advance booking matter (~£90-140 one way; book early). On arrival in Malé, get a local ferry or public speedboat to a guesthouse island such as Guraidhoo or Maafushi in South Malé Atoll (public ferry ~£2-3 / speedboat ~£15-20). Most guesthouse islands require modest dress off the beach. Dinner at the guesthouse (£5).

🛏Guraidhoo or Maafushi guesthouse (~£35)

Day 9

South Malé Atoll — snorkelling and sandbar

South Malé Atoll

Join a half-day snorkelling trip from your guesthouse island with a local dive boat/dhoni (~£25-35 including gear and reef fees) — the same reefs the tour's dhoni visits. Expect reef sharks, turtles and healthy coral. Afternoon free: walk the island's full loop (20 minutes), swim at the 'bikini beach' zone, and watch the sunset from the harbour wall. Book tomorrow onward through your guesthouse — multi-day local dhoni trips can be arranged between islands.

🚌Dhoni boat for snorkel trip (included in activity price)

🛏Guraidhoo/Maafushi guesthouse (~£35)

  • →Half-day reef snorkelling trip
  • →Island walk and bikini beach

Day 10

Felidhu Atoll crossing — local dhoni or speedboat

Felidhu Atoll

Arrange in advance (via your guesthouse or a local operator) a transfer/2-day excursion south to Felidhu (Vaavu) Atoll — local speedboat ~£30-45 per person, or a shared overnight dhoni trip. Felidhu's appeal is empty sandbars and near-untouched reefs. If a full crossing is tricky on the day, base around Guraidhoo/Fulidhoo (South Malé) and take long day trips instead — the reefs are comparable. Afternoon: sandbar picnic and snorkel from the boat.

🚌Shared speedboat/dhoni crossing (~£35)

🛏Vaavu/Felidhu guesthouse or dhoni liveaboard night (~£40)

  • →Felidhu Atoll crossing
  • →Sandbar snorkel stop
  • →Bodu Mora-style island visit

Day 11

Felidhu Atoll — reef time and island life

Felidhu Atoll

Full day on the water and on Felidhu's sandbank islands. Snorkel two or three reef edges with a local guide (~£25-30), do the island walk and visit the local mosque and school area (respectfully). Join a beach clean-up if your guesthouse organises one — several Felidhu guesthouses run weekly reef and beach clean-ups for guests. Night fishing trip in the evening is a classic Maldives local experience (~£20) with your catch cooked for dinner.

🚌Dhoni for snorkel/fishing trips (included in activity price)

🛏Felidhu/Vaavu guesthouse (~£40)

  • →Two-reef snorkelling trip
  • →Island community walk

Day 12

Return to South Malé — dolphin cruise at sunset

South Malé Atoll

Morning transfer back north to South Malé Atoll (~£25-35 shared speedboat). Afternoon in Maafushi or Guraidhoo: hammock time, a cheap local café lunch (£4), and booking a sunset dolphin cruise (~£20-25) — spinner dolphins are near-guaranteed offshore here. Alternatively, a dive for certified divers (~£40 per dive).

🚌Shared speedboat return (~£30)

🛏Maafushi/Guraidhoo guesthouse (~£35)

  • →Sunset dolphin cruise
  • →Optional dive
  • →Beach time
~£85
Day 13

South Malé Atoll — free day, sandbank and local food

South Malé Atoll

Linger day. Take a £15-20 half-day sandbank trip, or just rent a snorkel and swim off the house reef. Eat mas huni and roshi for breakfast, garudhiya for lunch. Do the souvenir and gift-shop circuit on Maafushi (fixed local prices). Pack up and confirm your boat back to Malé for the morning.

🚌Walking; optional dhoni trip (~£15-20)

🛏Maafushi/Guraidhoo guesthouse (~£35)

  • →Sandbank half-day trip
  • →House-reef snorkel
  • →Local Maldivian food crawl
~£55
Day 14

Ferry to Malé and fly out

Malé

Public ferry or speedboat to Malé (ferry ~£2, speedboat ~£15), walk the Male waterfront, fish market and the old Friday Mosque if time allows, then take the airport ferry (£1) and fly home from Velana International (MLE). If your international flight is tight, book a speedboat the night before — the public ferry schedule is not built around flight times.

🚌Ferry Malé + airport ferry (~£3-18)

🛏—

  • →Malé fish market and waterfront walk
~£25

Frequently asked questions

How much does Sri Lanka & Maldives Adventure — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,180 per person for 14 days in Sri Lanka & Maldives. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £3,219 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,180 — a saving of roughly £2,039 (63%) per person.

How long is the Sri Lanka & Maldives trip?+

This itinerary runs 14 days, covering 14 day-by-day stops through Sri Lanka & Maldives.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, beaches trip through Sri Lanka & Maldives, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
