8 days · Sri Lanka

The Visit Lanka Tours charges £890

£250saved per person (28%)

No-markup version: ~£640 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

An independent, self-launched version of The Visit Lanka Tours' 8-day private Sri Lanka circuit — Cultural Triangle temples and ruins, a Sigiriya climb, Kandy's Temple of the Tooth, the hill country tea route to Ella, Yala safari and a finish on the south coast at Mirissa. Instead of a private car and driver-guide, you'll use Sri Lanka's excellent and cheap public transport (intercity buses, the iconic Kandy–Ella train, shared tuk-tuks), book guesthouses and small hotels direct, and pick up safari jeeps and site guides locally. Same route, same highlights, roughly a third of the tour price. Costs are approximate per person for one traveller sharing a twin/double.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Colombo → Sigiriya (via Dambulla Caves)

Sigiriya / Dambulla

Land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), pick up a local tourist SIM at the arrivals hall (Dialog or Mobitel, ~£3-5 for data), withdraw rupees from an ATM and take the airport shuttle bus or a metered taxi to Colombo Fort or directly to the central bus stand. Catch an air-conditioned intercity bus or the cheaper CTB bus toward Dambulla (4-5 hrs, ~£2-3). If you arrive early enough, hop a tuk-tuk from Dambulla to the Cave Temple (~£2 each way) for the late-afternoon light and the 5pm puja. Continue 30-40 mins to Sigiriya by tuk-tuk or local bus and check into a guesthouse in the village. Dinner at a family-run rice-and-curry spot.

🚌Airport shuttle/metred taxi to Colombo Fort (~£3), intercity bus Colombo–Dambulla (~£2.50, 4-5 hrs), tuk-tuk or local bus Dambulla–Sigiriya (~£2)

Day 2

Polonnaruwa Ruins & Minneriya Elephant Safari

Polonnaruwa / Minneriya

Start early and take a local bus or shared tuk-tuk to Polonnaruwa (~1 hr). Rent a bicycle at the ruins entrance (~£3) — the site is flat, shaded and spread out, and cycling between the Royal Palace, Vatadage and Gal Vihara is far better than walking. Hire a site guide at the gate for ~£8 if you want the history (worth it). Grab the classic Sri Lankan rice-and-curry lunch at a local eatery (~£3). Mid-afternoon, head back toward Minneriya or Kaudulla for a shared jeep safari — book through your guesthouse the night before (jeep + park fees ~£30-40 per person shared; 'The Gathering' of elephants is best around Aug–Sep). Back in Sigiriya for dinner.

🚌Local bus/tuk-tuk Sigiriya–Polonnaruwa (~£2.50), bicycle rental at ruins (~£3), shared safari jeep (~£28 incl. park fee)

🛏Sigiriya village guesthouse (~£16)

  • →Cycle the ancient city of Polonnaruwa (UNESCO)
  • →Minneriya / Kaudulla National Park shared jeep safari
  • →Local rice and curry lunch

Day 3

Climb Sigiriya Rock, then Kandy

Sigiriya / Matale / Kandy

Beat the heat and crowds with a 6:30-7am start at Sigiriya Rock Fortress — the climb is ~1,200 steps and takes 1.5-2 hrs including the water gardens and frescoes. Entry ~£24 (foreigner rate). Back for breakfast and a swim, then head south. Bus to Dambulla (~£1) and onward to Matale/Kandy. Break the journey at a spice and herbal garden (Matale has several that are free to enter and run short tours), then continue into Kandy. Evening: walk the lake, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic for the 6:30pm evening puja with drums (~£2), and stay in the hills above town.

🚌Local bus Sigiriya–Dambulla (~£1), bus Dambulla–Kandy (~£2.50, 3 hrs), tuk-tuks for local hops (~£3)

🛏Kandy guesthouse or budget hotel near the lake (~£18)

  • →Sigiriya Rock Fortress climb (early start)
  • →Matale spice garden tour
  • →Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic evening puja
~£68
Day 4

Kandy — Botanical Gardens & Kandyan Dance

Kandy

A gentler day off your feet. Tuk-tuk to Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens (~£2 each way, entry ~£2) and give it 2-3 hrs — the orchid house and the avenue of giant Java figs are the highlights. Lunch in town, then browse the Kandy central market and the lakeside. Book a 5pm cultural show at the Kandyan Cultural Centre or the Kandy Lake Club (~£3-4) — an hour of dance, drums and a barefoot fire-walking finale. Cheap and a lot of fun. Dinner at a local hopper or kottu roti stand (~£3), and buy train tickets for tomorrow if you can (see note on booking seats).

🚌Tuk-tuks around Kandy (~£5 total)

🛏Kandy guesthouse (~£18)

  • →Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya
  • →Kandy market wander
  • →Traditional Kandyan dance and drumming performance
~£39
Day 5

The Kandy–Ella Train Through Tea Country

Kandy / Nuwara Eliya / Ella

The best day of the trip. Book the Kandy–Ella train in advance online (reserved 2nd/1st class ~£2-5; unreserved 3rd class is pennies but a scrum) — the 8:47am or ~11am departure crosses the Pathana highlands, tea estates and waterfalls with open-door views. Sit on the right-hand side. If you want to break the journey, hop off at Nanu Oya for Nuwara Eliya's tea factories and Gregory Lake, then take the afternoon bus/train onward. Arrive in Ella in the late afternoon, walk the village strip and watch the sunset from a hillside cafe. Book your Ella guesthouse with a valley view.

🚌Reserved train seat Kandy–Ella (~£4), local tuk-tuk transfers (~£3)

🛏Ella guesthouse with valley view (~£16)

  • →Scenic hill-country train ride Kandy–Ella
  • →Tea plantation and waterfall views from the train window
  • →Ella village viewpoints
~£35
Day 6

Ella: Little Adam's Peak, Nine Arch Bridge & Yala Safari

Ella / Tissamaharama

Up early for the 45-minute climb of Little Adam's Peak (free, sunrise is magic), then walk down to Nine Arch Bridge for the ~9:30am train crossing — the classic photo, and completely free if you get there on foot. See Rawana Falls by tuk-tuk or on the bus south. Midday, take the bus down to Tissamaharama/Weerawila (~£3, 2-3 hrs) and check in. Late afternoon: shared jeep safari into Yala National Park (~£35-45 pp including park fees and jeep, book via your guesthouse). Late afternoon/early evening drives are good for leopard, elephant and sloth bear — though wildlife is never guaranteed.

🚌Local bus Ella–Tissamaharama (~£3), shared safari jeep (~£35 incl. park entry)

🛏Tissamaharama or Weerawila guesthouse (~£15)

  • →Sunrise hike Little Adam's Peak
  • →Nine Arch Bridge train crossing
  • →Rawana Falls
  • →Yala National Park afternoon safari
~£76
Day 7

Tissamaharama to Mirissa Beach

Mirissa

A slow travel day down the coast. Take the bus south via Matara (~2-3 hrs, ~£2.50) then a local bus or short tuk-tuk hop to Mirissa. Check into a beach guesthouse or small hotel away from the main strip for better value, and spend the afternoon doing very little: Coconut Tree Hill for sunset, swim at Mirissa Beach, seafood barbecue on the sand for dinner (~£6-8). If you're here Nov–Apr, ask at the harbour about a morning whale-watching boat (~£20-25).

🚌Local bus Tissamaharama–Matara–Mirissa (~£3), tuk-tuk to accommodation (~£1.50)

🛏Mirissa beach guesthouse (~£18)

  • →Coconut Tree Hill sunset
  • →Mirissa Beach swim
  • →Seafood dinner on the beach
~£32
Day 8

Mirissa → Galle Fort → Colombo Departure

Mirissa / Galle / Colombo

If your flight is in the evening, join a 6:30am whale-watching trip from Mirissa harbour (~£22) — blue whales are common Nov–Apr. Otherwise, take the bus to Galle (~£1, 45 mins) and spend a couple of hours inside the walled Galle Fort: ramparts walk, lighthouse, Dutch Reformed Church and a cold drink in a courtyard cafe. Then take the south-coast expressway bus or the slower coastal train from Galle to Colombo Fort (~£1.50-4, 2-3 hrs), and the airport shuttle or a taxi to CMB (~£4-6). If your flight leaves very early, overnight in Negombo instead — 20 mins from the airport and half the price of Colombo.

🚌Bus Mirissa–Galle (~£1), expressway bus or train Galle–Colombo (~£3), shuttle/taxi to airport (~£5)

🛏— (departure day); optional Negombo guesthouse (~£15)

  • →Optional whale and dolphin watching from Mirissa
  • →Galle Fort ramparts, lighthouse and Dutch Reformed Church
  • →Last-stop kottu roti or curd and treacle

Frequently asked questions

How much does Sri Lanka Culture, Safari & Coast — Self-Launched 8-Day Loop cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £640 per person for 8 days in Sri Lanka. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with The Visit Lanka Tours?+

Yes — The Visit Lanka Tours charges around £890 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £640 — a saving of roughly £250 (28%) per person.

How long is the Sri Lanka trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Sri Lanka.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, wildlife trip through Sri Lanka, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
