Sri Lanka Odyssey: Colombo, Dambulla, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Yala & Bentota (Self-Launched)

Land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). Buy a local SIM (Dialog/Mobitel, ~£3-5 for a data pack) and take the airport shuttle bus or a metered taxi/tuk-tuk into Colombo (~£3-15 depending on mode). Check into a Colombo guesthouse or budget hotel in Fort, Pettah or Colombo 07. Spend the afternoon on a self-launched walking tour: Independence Square, Gangarama Temple (small entry fee), the Dutch Hospital Shopping Complex, Pettah market and the arcade district. Optional evening: Colombo Lotus Tower observation deck, or a beer at Dutch Hospital. Skip paid nightclubs/casinos unless you want them.

Take an intercity bus or train from Colombo to Dambulla (~3-4 hrs, £2-4; buses leave frequently from Pettah/Kadawatha). Check in near Dambulla town or Sigiriya. Early start to beat heat and crowds at Sigiriya Lion Rock (~1,500 steps, entry ~£20-25 — the single biggest ticket of the trip). Visit the Sigiriya Museum. In the afternoon hire a tuk-tuk/guide for a Hiriwaduna village experience: village walk, catamaran ride on the lake with birdwatching, and a cooking demonstration with a traditional lunch of village food (~£8-12 for the whole experience if arranged locally). Finish with an afternoon shared jeep safari in Minneriya National Park to see wild elephants (~£20-25 per person sharing a jeep, plus park entry).

Take the famous hill-country train from Kandy to Nanu Oya/Nuwara Eliya — book a reserved 2nd-class seat in advance (~£2-4, unreserved gets crowded). Check into a Nuwara Eliya guesthouse. Afternoon: visit a working tea factory and plantation around Pedro Tea Estate or Damro (free/low-cost tour with tasting), try tea plucking, and stroll the Little England town centre. Optional: paddle boat on Gregory Lake (~£3) or hire a bicycle.

Look for leopards, elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and lots of birdlife; late-afternoon light and animal activity are best.

Optional paid extras include a famed local guided walk or a Galle cooking class with lunch if you want them. Continue by bus/train to Bentota or Ahungalla (~1.5-2 hrs, £1-2) and check into a beach guesthouse.

Final morning on the beach. Take the coastal bus or train back towards Colombo and connect to Bandaranaike International Airport (allow a generous buffer — the coastal route can be slow).
