Lanka Safe Tours charges £1,260

£600saved per person (48%)

No-markup version: ~£660 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of Lanka Safe Tours' 13-day Sri Lanka circuit — same route from Negombo via Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kandy, Adam's Peak, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala, Mirissa and Galle — but done on public buses, trains and shared tuk-tuks instead of a private car and driver, with guesthouses and hostels in place of the tour's hotels. Activities are booked directly or through Klook/GetYourGuide (Sigiriya tickets, Minneriya and Yala jeep safaris, whale watching, cultural dance show) and you'll ride the famous Kandy–Ella train for a fraction of the tour price. Costs are approximate backpacker/budget rates in GBP and assume shared/dorm or budget private rooms and local food.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Colombo / Negombo to Sigiriya

Negombo → Sigiriya

Land at Bandaranaike International Airport and take a tuk-tuk or shared shuttle (~£5) to Negombo for breakfast, or head straight on. The cheapest way north is the bus: get a local bus or tuk-tuk to Kurunegala/Dambulla junction and change for Sigiriya (~£4-6 total, 4-5 hours). Alternatively pre-book a shared shuttle via Klook (~£18). Check into a guesthouse in Sigiriya village and walk out for your first rice-and-curry dinner. Buy your Sigiriya rock ticket online in advance (Klook, ~£25) to skip the queue.

Start early for Sigiriya Lion Rock (opens 7am) — the climb is 1,200 steps and takes ~2 hours, best before the heat. Then take a local bus to Anuradhapura (~1.5 hours, ~£1). Anuradhapura is huge — rent a bicycle at the site entrance (~£2) and cycle between stupas and dagobas; the combined archaeological ticket is ~£25 and covers all sites. Sleep in Anuradhapura town.

In the afternoon, join a shared jeep safari to Minneriya National Park from Habarana or Polonnaruwa; Klook/GetYourGuide shared safaris run ~£30-35 per person including park fees. Take the morning bus from Kandy to Hatton (~3 hours, ~£2), then local bus or shared tuk-tuk up to Dalhousie (~£1.50). Rest in the afternoon at a small guesthouse, then start the night ascent around 2am. There are 5,500 steps, ~4-5 hours up; the summit is freezing so bring layers and a head torch. Season is December to May — outside that the trail is often closed, so check locally and swap in a Horton Plains hike if needed.

Morning at a working tea factory (Pedro Tea Estate or Labookellie, ~£3 tour). Then the highlight: the train from Nanu Oya to Ella. Second-class reserved tickets (~£2-4) sell out on the day from the station; third class is fine and often more sociable. Frequently asked questions

How much does Sri Lanka Self-Launched: Ancient Cities, Hill Country & South Coast (13 Days) cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £660 per person for 13 days in Sri Lanka. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Lanka Safe Tours?+

Yes — Lanka Safe Tours charges around £1,260 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £660 — a saving of roughly £600 (48%) per person.

How long is the Sri Lanka trip?+

This itinerary runs 13 days, covering 13 day-by-day stops through Sri Lanka.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, hiking trip through Sri Lanka, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
