No-markup version: ~£470 per person

A 7-day island-hopping hike along Sweden's Stockholm Archipelago Trail, from Svartsö in the north to Landsort at the southern tip. Instead of a guided group trip with luggage transfers, you book your own hostel beds and use the regular Waxholmsbolaget archipelago ferries, local buses and the odd rowing boat crossing — all for around a third of the tour price. Expect easy gravel lanes, grazed meadows, rocky coastal singletrack, daily cold dips in the Baltic, cinnamon buns on Utö and a wood-fired sauna. Roughly 70km of walking over six days; navigation is straightforward with the official trail markers and the free trail map app. All costs approximate.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Stockholm & ferry out to Svartsö

Stockholm → Svartsö

Land at Arlanda and take the Flygbussarna coach to Stockholm City Terminal (~129 SEK / £10, 45 mins) — the Arlanda Express is faster at ~320 SEK / £24. Store bags at Central Station lockers if you arrive early, then walk 10 mins to Strömkajen quay. Buy a Waxholmsbolaget ticket (or a 7-day archipelago card, ~£40-50) and take the afternoon ferry to Svartsö (~2-2.5hrs, ~£12-15). From the jetty, walk the 4km trail section to your hostel, carrying your own pack — no quad-bike luggage transfer when self-launching, so pack light. Buy groceries at the small shop near the jetty for breakfast. Sunset here in summer is close to 22:00.

🚌Flygbussarna coach + Waxholmsbolaget ferry (~£22-25 total)

🛏Svartsö hostel or STF-style guesthouse, multi-share dorm (~£22-28pp)

  • →Arlanda to city transfer
  • →Waxholmsbolaget ferry to Svartsö
  • →4km trail walk to hostel
  • →Evening swim from the rocks
~£75
Day 2

Svartsö → Ingmarsö → row across to Finnhamn

Svartsö / Ingmarsö / Finnhamn

Self-catered breakfast, then walk the Svartsö section of the trail (18km, ~5-6hrs) along gravel lanes, grazed meadows and boathouses. Take the short public ferry to Ingmarsö (check the Waxholmsbolaget timetable in advance — departures are limited, so plan the day around them). Follow forest paths across the island and finish with the Batluffarleden: two rowing boats moored on either side of a narrow sound, row ~400m across and leave a boat on each bank. This is a public tradition, free to use and well signed. Check into Finnhamn's characterful old hostel (built 1915) and cook dinner in the shared kitchen.

🚌Public archipelago ferry (~£5-8) + free rowing boat crossing

🛏Finnhamn hostel, multi-share (~£25-30pp)

  • →19km trail walk
  • →Short public ferry to Ingmarsö
  • →Batluffarleden rowing boat crossing
  • →Wild swim stop

Day 3

Bullerö in Nämdöskärgården National Park, then Utö

Finnhamn → Bullerö → Utö

Optional dawn walk on Finnhamn. Then charter-free option: check if the scheduled Waxholm boat or a shared taxi boat covers Finnhamn–Bullerö; otherwise join a small taxi boat (about £25-35pp if shared, and you'll need to arrange it the day before — ask at the hostel). Bullerö, once painter Bruno Liljefors' retreat, is the gateway to Nämdöskärgården National Park: windswept granite slabs, pine forest, cracking swim spots and a small visitor centre. Continue by boat to Utö (~2hrs). Check into Utö hostel in Gruvbyn — your base for three nights, which lets you leave your bag unpacked and hike with a daypack only.

🚌Taxi boat / shared charter (~£30) — the one leg where self-launching costs more than a group

🛏Utö Vandrarhem/hostel, multi-share (~£25-30pp)

  • →8km walk on Bullerö
  • →Nämdöskärgården National Park visitor centre
  • →Wild swim on granite slabs
  • →Boat to Utö
~£70
Day 4

Utö's wild east coast & old mines — the big day

Utö

The hardest day: 16km, 6-7hrs, ~300m up and down. Follow gravel roads and reed-fringed boardwalks, then a rugged, rocky path along the exposed east coast facing the open sea — slow going underfoot, so start early. Pass the old mining village of Gruvbyn with its 700-year-old water-filled mine shafts, and detour to the Utö Mines museum if time allows. Swim at one of the sheltered coves on the return. Dinner is not included: grab pizza or a proper meal at one of Gruvbyn's restaurants, or buy groceries at the island shop and cook at the hostel. Utö's bakery does excellent cinnamon buns — worth the queue.

🚌On foot

🛏Utö hostel, multi-share (~£25-30pp)

  • →16km coastal trail
  • →Utö mines & Gruvbyn village
  • →Wild swim
  • →Utö bakery pit stop
~£55
Day 5

Ålö's white sands, then sauna and hot tub

Utö / Ålö

Take the local bus (or walk) across the Ålö bridge to the wildest section of the trail — pine forest, cliffs dropping to the sea and the extraordinary white sand of Storsand beach. Walk 13km of the Ålö section, then swim at Storsand before heading back to Utö. Book the hostel's wood-fired sauna and hot tub in advance (or use the publicly bookable sauna at Utö; expect ~£15-25pp for a shared session), alternating heat with dips in the Baltic a few steps away.

🚌Local bus across the Ålö bridge (~£3)

🛏Utö hostel, multi-share (~£25-30pp)

  • →13km Ålö trail
  • →Storsand beach wild swim
  • →Wood-fired sauna & hot tub session
~£65
Day 6

South to Öja and the Landsort lighthouse

Utö → Öja / Landsort

Travel south by local bus/ferry combination to Ankarudden and across to Öja — check the Waxholmsbolaget and SL bus timetables carefully, as connections are sparse; the Utö–Ankarudden–Öja run takes roughly 2-3hrs with transfers. Check into Öja/Landsort hostel, then hike the 11km Landsort section from one end of the island to the other: flowing singletrack, rugged capes, and a detour to Ersta Battery, a once top-secret Cold War coastal artillery station. Finish at Sweden's oldest active lighthouse (1689) at the southern tip — book a lighthouse tour directly if you want to climb it (~£8). Celebrate with dinner at a Landsort village restaurant, or self-cater.

🚌Local bus + ferry chain (~£10-15)

🛏Öja/Landsort hostel or guesthouse, multi-share (~£25-30pp)

  • →11km Landsort trail
  • →Ersta Battery Cold War bunker
  • →Landsort lighthouse
  • →Final swim off the southern cape
~£70
Day 7

Ferry, bus and train back to Stockholm

Öja → Ankarudden → Nynäshamn → Stockholm

One last island breakfast, then take the ferry from Öja to Ankarudden (~30 mins), the local bus to Nynäshamn (~30 mins) and the commuter train to Stockholm Central (~1hr, all cheaply covered by an SL travelcard day ticket ~£15). You'll be back in the centre around midday. From Central Station, take the Flygbussarna or Arlanda Express straight to the airport — don't book a flight before 16:00 to leave buffer for ferry delays. If you're extending, Downtown Camper by Scandic near Central Station is a good base, or a Stockholm hostel dorm from ~£30.

🚌Ferry + bus + SL commuter train (~£15)

🛏None (departure day)

  • →Ferry to Ankarudden
  • →Bus and commuter train to Stockholm
  • →Optional final city wander
~£30

Frequently asked questions

How much does Hike and Wild Swim the Stockholm Archipelago — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £470 per person for 7 days in Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Much Better Adventures?+

Yes — Much Better Adventures charges around £1,150 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £470 — a saving of roughly £680 (59%) per person.

How long is the Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden trip?+

This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a hiking, adventure, slow-travel trip through Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
