A five-day self-launched sea-kayaking and wild-camping adventure through the Stockholm Archipelago — 30,000 islands of granite skerries, pine forest and sheltered Baltic coves. Paddle island-to-island from Stavsnäs, hike a section of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail on Nämdö, wild camp on uninhabited shores, and take a sauna-and-sea plunge on Bullerön. You'll hire kayaks and camping gear locally, travel out on public buses, and cook for yourself — all for a fraction of the guided group-tour price. No prior kayaking experience needed, but you must be able to swim and should be confident in basic camping and navigation. Note: all costs are approximate and per person.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Stockholm, travel to Stavsnäs, first paddle

Stockholm → Stavsnäs → outer archipelago

Land at Arlanda and ride into town — the Flygbussarna coach to Stockholm City Terminal is the cheapest option at around 129 SEK (£10); the Arlanda Express train is faster at ~320 SEK (£24). Store any big luggage in the lockers at Central Station, then take bus 433 or 434 from Slussen to Stavsnäs (roughly 1 hour, ~90 SEK / £7). At the kayak centre (e.g. a local outfitter such as Skärgårdens Kanotcenter) pick up your tandem touring kayak, paddles, spray deck, life vest, dry bags AND your camping gear — you can hire a full kit package for around 4 days. Pack everything into the kayaks, get a safety briefing and a short paddle intro, then launch for a 1–2 hour explore between the islets. Paddle to a quiet uninhabited island, pitch camp, take a Baltic dip, and cook dinner on a camp stove.

Day 2

Paddle to Nämdö and hike the Archipelago Trail

Nämdö

Breakfast in the wild, then paddle 3–4 hours (about 7 miles) across to Nämdö, one of the archipelago's largest islands and mostly a nature reserve. Set up camp in a sheltered north-coast bay, then walk a section of the new Stockholm Archipelago Trail — around 8 miles through forest, meadow and rocky shoreline, past an old church, a lakeside path, and the working organic farm at Östanvik (seasonal). Back at camp, use the public sauna built by the Archipelago Foundation (first-come, first-served, small fee ~50 SEK / £4), then a bracing Baltic dip. Cook dinner and fall asleep to the waves.

Day 3

Paddle to Bullerön, artists' sanctuary

Bullerön, Nämdöskärgården National Park

After breakfast paddle about 3 hours (6 miles) toward the wilder fringes, aiming for remote Bullerön in the national park — a late-19th-century retreat for Swedish painters. Follow the short island trail (1 hr, ~2 miles) through rocky outcrops and pine forest, pausing at wildlife painter Bruno Liljefors' old hunting cabin. Relax in Bullerön's newly built shore-side sauna (a small turn-up fee), then a bracing plunge into the Baltic. If the water is calm and you're keen, take an optional sunset paddle as the archipelago glows golden. Wild camp and cook dinner.

Day 4

To the wild edge — Långviksskär

Långviksskär, Nämdöskärgården National Park

A bigger paddling day: 4–5 hours (7 miles) southeast toward Långviksskär, the remote true outpost of the archipelago deep in the national park. The landscape here is raw — glacier-shaped granite ridges, crevices and smooth slabs. Stop on quiet islets and in sheltered coves along the way for snacks and Baltic swims. This stretch crosses more exposed water, so check the forecast and wind direction before setting off and be ready to take a sheltered alternative route if conditions turn. Pitch your final wild camp among the rocks, surrounded by open sea — keep paddling east and the next landfall is Estonia.

🛏Wild camping (leased tent)

  • Kayak 4–5 hrs (~7 miles)
  • Wild swims and island stops
  • Wild camp at Långviksskär
~£78
Day 5

Final morning, boat back to Stavsnäs and Stockholm

Outer archipelago → Stavsnäs → Stockholm

Ease into a last morning in the stillness of the outer islands — a sea dip, coffee as the light dances on the water, and a short 1–2 hour paddle among the nearby islets. Around midday take a scheduled archipelago boat or taxi boat (e.g. Waxholmsbolaget route) back across the islands to Stavsnäs kayak centre, where you can shower, unpack and return your gear. Then catch the bus 433/434 back to Stockholm (about 1 hour, ~£7), arriving by late afternoon. Store bags or head straight on. If flying out the same evening, allow plenty of time and book a flight from Arlanda departing no earlier than 7 PM.

🚌Waxholmsbolaget boat (~£12) + public bus to Stockholm (~£7)

🛏Own arrangement (e.g. hostel in Stockholm)

  • Final short paddle
  • Archipelago/Waxholmsbolaget boat back to Stavsnäs
  • Return gear, shower
  • Bus back to Stockholm
~£30

Frequently asked questions

How much does Kayak, Hike and Wild Camp the Stockholm Archipelago — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £425 per person for 5 days in Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Much Better Adventures?+

Yes — Much Better Adventures charges around £895 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £425 — a saving of roughly £470 (53%) per person.

How long is the Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden trip?+

This itinerary runs 5 days, covering 5 day-by-day stops through Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, hiking, backpacker trip through Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
