Europamundo charges £1,330

£240saved per person (18%)

No-markup version: ~£1,090 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of Europamundo's 9-day "Swiss and Italian Spotlight" coach tour — Zurich, the Bernese Alps, Lake Como, Milan, Pisa, Rome, Florence and Venice — rebuilt for independent travellers. Same headline sights, but you travel by Swiss and Italian trains, stay in hostels and budget guesthouses instead of 4* chain hotels, and book local walking tours and skip-the-line tickets yourself. Costs are rough backpacker/mid-budget estimates in GBP and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Zurich — lakeside wander

Zurich

Fly or train into Zurich (a Swiss Travel Pass or supersaver ticket covers onward travel — see Day 3). Check into a hostel in the Langstrasse or Niederdorf area, then walk the old town: Bahnhofstrasse, Lindenhof viewpoint, Grossmünster and the lake promenade at Bürkliplatz. Grab a supermarket dinner (Coop/Migros) to keep costs down — Switzerland is pricey.

Join a pay-what-you-want or small-group walking tour of the old town (book via GetYourGuide, ~£15), or DIY with a free audio guide. In the afternoon take a scheduled Lake Zurich boat (ZSG) down the lake to medieval Rapperswil — the short-hop ticket with a Swiss Travel Pass or Half-Fare Card is much cheaper than the full round trip. Climb to the castle and wander the rose gardens, then return by S-Bahn (S7, ~35 min).

Take the early IC train Zurich–Bern–Interlaken Ost then the BOB to Grindelwald (~2h45). Ride the Firstbahn cable car up to Grindelwald First (£40-50 with Half-Fare Card) and walk the short trail to the Cliff Walk suspension bridge with Eiger and glacier views — the DIY version of the tour's included mountain day. Descend, then train to Lucerne (~2h) for the Chapel Bridge, Lion Monument and lakefront, before the 45-min train back to Zurich. Long day: leave early. (Mount Titlis is a pricier alternative from Lucerne, ~£95-110.)

Continue to Como (~40 min) for lunch by the Duomo and a lakeside stroll (a 1-hour public boat to Cernobbio is ~£8 if time allows). Evening train Como–Milano Centrale (~40 min). Take a fast Frecciarossa/Italo train Milan–Pisa Centrale (~4h with a change in Florence, book early for ~£30-40), then the local 'LAM Rossa' bus or 20-min walk to Piazza dei Miracoli for the Leaning Tower (climbing the tower needs advance booking, ~£20 — optional). Continue Pisa–Rome by regional or Frecciabianca train (~3h, ~£25). Late check-in near Termini.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Swiss & Italian Spotlight: Self-Launched Zurich to Venice cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,090 per person for 9 days in Switzerland & Italy. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Europamundo?+

Yes — Europamundo charges around £1,330 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,090 — a saving of roughly £240 (18%) per person.

How long is the Switzerland & Italy trip?+

This itinerary runs 9 days, covering 9 day-by-day stops through Switzerland & Italy.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, city-breaks, hiking trip through Switzerland & Italy, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
