PVTravels charges £325

£133saved per person (41%)

No-markup version: ~£192 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A DIY version of PVTravels' 4-day Tambopata lodge package — same jungle: canopy tower and zip-line, Sandoval Lake in the Tambopata National Reserve, an Ese'Eja family visit, rustic river fishing and the parakeet clay lick — booked direct with a family-run jungle lodge plus a local guide, instead of a fixed group departure. You arrange your own flight or bus from Cusco/Lima to Puerto Maldonado, walk or take a cheap mototaxi into town, and the lodge handles the boat transfers, meals and guided excursions exactly as on the tour version. Book 4-6 weeks ahead in dry season (April-November); January-March is the wettest. All costs are per-person estimates in GBP and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Puerto Maldonado — boat up the Madre de Dios, canopy tower & zip-line

Puerto Maldonado / Tambopata river lodge

Fly Lima-Cusco-Puerto Maldonado or take the overnight bus from Cusco (Cruz del Sur/Oltursa, ~£15-22, 10-12 hrs) arriving early morning. From the airport, a mototaxi into town is S/5-8 (~£1.50); taxi is S/20-25. Stock up on water and cash (PEM airport ATM) before leaving town. Most jungle lodges run one shared boat transfer per day around midday down/up the Madre de Dios — message your lodge with your arrival time and meet at the Puerto Maldonado river port (Puerto Capitania) for the 30-45 min motorised canoe. Settle into your bungalow, then join the lodge guide for the canopy walkway (a 35 m tower at the base of a lupuna tree) and the ~190 m zip-line with a hanging bridge crossing. Late-afternoon boat excursion hunting caimans and capybaras along the riverbank. Dinner at the lodge; no WiFi — bring a headtorch and a power bank.

🚌Overnight bus Cusco-Puerto Maldonado ~£18 (or 45-min flight from Cusco ~£60-90); mototaxi airport-town S/6; shared lodge boat to Tambopata ~£8-10 return

🛏Family-run jungle lodge bungalow with private bathroom and mosquito nets (e.g. budget-to-mid lodges around Lake Sandoval / Madre de Dios, £22-35 pp/night incl. full board)

  • →Canopy tower walk (35 m)
  • →Zip-line through forest canopy (~190 m)
  • →Caiman and capybara river safari by boat
~£62
Day 2

Sandoval Lake in the Tambopata National Reserve — hike & kayak

Lake Sandoval, Tambopata National Reserve

Early breakfast, then a boat to the Tambopata National Reserve control station (Monkey Island area) and pay your own reserve entry (S/30-80 depending on category, ~£7-18 — keep the receipt). Hike ~1.5 hrs on a flat, muddy trail to Lake Sandoval (wellies provided by the lodge). Swap to a rowing canoe/kayak on the oxbow lake and drift the edges looking for giant river otters, hoatzins, turtles, caimans and monkeys — the most reliable otter sightings are mid-morning. Packed lunch by the lake, then walk out and float back to the lodge. Siesta, then an optional night walk with a guide to spot frogs, tarantulas and insects. Ask your lodge to confirm park fees and guide costs in writing before you set out — this is where group tours often cut corners.

🚌Lodge boat to reserve station + guided trail walk (~1.5 hrs each way); park entrance paid separately

🛏Same jungle lodge bungalow, full board

  • →Guided hike to Lake Sandoval (~1.5 hrs)
  • →Kayak/canoe on Sandoval Lake
  • →Wildlife spotting: giant otters, hoatzins, turtles, monkeys
  • →Optional night walk
~£55
Day 3

Ese'Eja family visit and rustic fishing on the Madre de Dios

Madre de Dios River / Ese'Eja community

Slow morning birdwatching from the lodge deck, then a boat excursion to an Ese'Eja indigenous family community downriver. Expect a low-key, genuinely local visit — cassava plots, plant knowledge, traditional dress and dances if the family is hosting that day, and handicrafts for sale (bring small notes). Note from past travellers: the dance isn't guaranteed and visits can feel staged; go in with modest expectations and ask your guide to translate. Lunch with the family or back at the lodge. Afternoon rustic fishing from the riverbank with handlines — piranha, catfish and sardines are the usual catch, cooked up for dinner if you're lucky. Sunset boat ride back; ask the boatman to cut the engine near sandbanks for caiman eyeshine.

🚌Lodge boat excursion on the Madre de Dios (approx. 1-1.5 hrs each way)

🛏Same jungle lodge bungalow, full board

  • →Visit to Ese'Eja indigenous family (customs, language, dance, crafts)
  • →Rustic handline fishing on the Madre de Dios River
  • →Sunset and caiman boat ride
~£45
Day 4

Parakeet clay lick at dawn — return to Puerto Maldonado

Tambopata clay lick / Puerto Maldonado

05:00 start with coffee and fruit, then a short boat ride and forest walk to a riverside clay lick to watch dozens of parakeets and macaws descend for mineral-rich soil at first light — silent, dawn-only and the best wildlife moment of the trip. Breakfast back at the lodge, check out by 09:00, and take the shared boat back to Puerto Maldonado arriving ~10:00, leaving comfortable time for a 12:45-14:30 flight to Lima or Cusco. Lodge transfers to the airport are usually included if you book direct — confirm in advance. If your flight is later, a cheap set-menu lunch in the Bellavista market area is ~S/12-15 (~£3).

🚌Dawn boat + short walk to clay lick; shared lodge boat back to Puerto Maldonado; airport drop-off or mototaxi S/6

  • →Parakeet and macaw clay lick at dawn
  • →Birdwatching from the river
~£30

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Tambopata Amazon Jungle: 4 Days from Puerto Maldonado cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £192 per person for 4 days in Tambopata, Peru. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with PVTravels?+

Yes — PVTravels charges around £325 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £192 — a saving of roughly £133 (41%) per person.

How long is the Tambopata, Peru trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Tambopata, Peru.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, backpacker trip through Tambopata, Peru, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
