G Adventures charges £1,150

£379saved per person (33%)

No-markup version: ~£771 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of G Adventures' 6-day G Lodge Amazon trip: five nights at a comfortable jungle lodge on the Tambopata River near Puerto Maldonado, with naturalist-led night walks, caiman-spotting cruises, oxbow lake excursions, a macaw clay lick visit and a Brazil nut conservation walk. Instead of booking the operator's package, you book a comparable eco-lodge direct (or via an independent local agency like Tambopata Ecolodge, Posada Amazonas or a small Puerto Maldonado operator), fly or bus into Puerto Maldonado yourself, and take shared boats/collectivos. All costs are approximate backpacker-to-midrange rates in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Puerto Maldonado — boat upriver to the lodge

Puerto Maldonado / Tambopata River

Fly into Puerto Maldonado (flights from Lima or Cusco are often £50–90 one way; a long-haul overnight bus from Cusco is ~£20–25 but eats a day). Head to a local lodge office or meeting point by midday — most Tambopata lodges include the river transfer in their nightly rate, but double-check when booking. Travel ~1–2 hours by road and motorised canoe upriver, keeping eyes peeled for capybara, herons and river turtles. After dinner, join the lodge naturalist for a flashlight night walk around the grounds in search of tarantulas, owls, poison dart frogs and snakes. Bring a headtorch and quick-dry clothes; the boat baggage limit is usually ~10kg, so store excess gear at your Puerto Maldonado hostel.

🚌Flight or bus to Puerto Maldonado, then lodge-included 4x4/van + motorised canoe upriver (~1–2 hrs)

Day 2

Oxbow lakes, clay licks and a night caiman cruise

Tambopata National Reserve buffer zone

Morning guided walk with the lodge naturalist to a nearby oxbow lake — paddle a small catamaran or canoe and look for hoatzin, caiman, squirrel monkeys and giant otters. Learn about medicinal plants and forest uses along the trail. Lunch back at the lodge, then free time for the hammock, swimming in the lodge stream or a short visit to a local working plantation (usually a small optional fee, ~£5–10, paid direct). After dinner, head out by motorised canoe with a spotlight to find caimans on the riverbanks. Book all guided excursions through the lodge — most lodges price a 3-day/2-night or 4-day package including guiding, meals and boats.

Day 3

Hidden lake boat excursion — black caiman and giant otters

Tambopata National Reserve

Full-morning boat excursion deeper into the reserve to a spectacular hidden lake, one of the best chances in the region for giant river otters and black caiman. Return for lunch and a free afternoon — read in the hammock, swim, or ask the lodge about a canopy tower or tree-platform climb if they have one (some lodges offer this as an optional extra, ~£15–25). Bring binoculars; cheap ones are sold in Puerto Maldonado if you forgot yours.

Day 4

Collpa de Guacamayos — macaw clay lick

Tambopata / Colorado clay lick area

Early start by boat upriver to a bird and mammal clay lick. From a hide, watch (with luck) scarlet macaws and other parrots descend to the mineral-rich clay, plus peccaries feeding in a separate area. This is a full-morning outing — bring layers and a rain shell. Back to the lodge for a late lunch and free afternoon. Note: some licks require a permit or a special guided add-on; your lodge can arrange it, or book independently through a Puerto Maldonado agency if you're lodge-hopping.

Day 5

Brazil nut trail and community conservation area

Tambopata

Walk with a local guide to a Brazil nut concession and conservation area, learning how the nuts are harvested, cracked and sold — one of the region's main sustainable incomes. Wildlife spotting along the way (monkeys, toucans, maybe agouti). Free afternoon for swimming, hammock time or a final jungle walk. This is a good day to tip your lodge guide (customary ~10%, ~£15–25 for the stay) and settle any extras.

Day 6

Canoe back to Puerto Maldonado and fly out

Tambopata → Puerto Maldonado

Breakfast, then return by canoe and road transfer to Puerto Maldonado. Don't book flights out before 11am — river travel can be slower than expected in low water. If you have a later flight, drop bags at a café or hostel and wander the Plaza de Armas or the Fitzcarrald viewpoint before heading to the airport.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Tambopata Amazon Lodge Adventure — 6 Days cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £771 per person for 6 days in Tambopata, Peruvian Amazon. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,150 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £771 — a saving of roughly £379 (33%) per person.

How long is the Tambopata, Peruvian Amazon trip?+

This itinerary runs 6 days, covering 6 day-by-day stops through Tambopata, Peruvian Amazon.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, backpacker trip through Tambopata, Peruvian Amazon, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
