Cheetah Classic Safari: Self-Launched Tanzania Northern Circuit
6 days · Tanzania
World Adventure Tours charges £1,645
No-markup version: ~£905 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched version of the classic 6-day Kilimanjaro–Tarangire–Ngorongoro–Serengeti safari loop. Instead of a private guided Land Cruiser with lodges throughout, you base yourself in Moshi/Arusha, share a seat on a small-group or joining safari (or use public buses + a shared 4WD hire) and sleep in budget guesthouses and permanent tented camps. All park fees are paid directly through TANAPA/NCA, and activities are booked via GetYourGuide, Klook or directly with the park gate. Costs are approximate 2026 backpacker rates in GBP.
Day-by-day
Arrive Kilimanjaro Airport → Moshi
Moshi
Land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and skip the included private transfer — take a pre-booked shared airport shuttle or local taxi (about 45–60 min, £10–15 shared) to Moshi town. Check into a budget guesthouse near the clock tower, buy a local SIM (Vodacom/Airtel, ~£3 for data), change some shillings and pick up snacks and a refillable water bottle. In the evening, grab dinner at a local 'hoteli' (rice, beans, grilled chicken, ~£3–4) and confirm your safari pickup for tomorrow with the operator or through the platform you booked with.
🚌Shared shuttle or taxi from JRO to Moshi, ~£12
🛏Budget guesthouse in Moshi (e.g. small family-run lodge), shared double ~£15/night
- →Shared airport shuttle to Moshi
- →SIM card and cash setup
- →Moshi town orientation walk
Tarangire National Park game drive
Tarangire National Park
Early pickup (~7:30am) in a shared 4WD with open roof — either a small-group joining safari booked via GetYourGuide/Klook or a seat-share arranged directly with a Moshi operator. Drive roughly 2.5 hours to Tarangire, pay the park entry at the gate, and spend the day among baobabs and huge elephant herds. Packed lunch at a picnic site inside the park. Late afternoon, transfer towards Karatu/Mto wa Mbu for the night. Park fees: Tarangire ~£55–65 per adult per 24h, plus vehicle fee ~£25 shared between passengers.
🚌Shared safari 4WD, Moshi → Tarangire → Karatu (~£70 shared seat)
🛏Budget guesthouse or basic lodge in Karatu, shared double ~£20/night
- →Full-day game drive in Tarangire National Park
- →Elephant herds and baobab scenery
- →Picnic lunch inside the park
Ngorongoro Crater descent
Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Leave early (5:30–6am) to reach the crater rim before the crowds. Pay the Ngorongoro Conservation Area entry (~£55–70 per person plus crater descent vehicle fee ~£25–30 shared) at the gate. Descend into the caldera for a full morning of game viewing — lion, black rhino, buffalo, hippo and flamingo on Lake Magadi — then picnic at Ngoitokitok springs. Exit by mid-afternoon and drive to the Karatu/Ikoma side for the night, where it's cooler and considerably cheaper than the rim lodges.
🚌Shared 4WD, Karatu → Ngorongoro rim → descent → Ikoma (~£80 shared seat)
🛏Permanent tented camp or wild camp near Ikoma, ~£25/night
- →Ngorongoro Crater game drive
- →Rhino and lion spotting
- →Picnic at Ngoitokitok springs
Ndutu plains and into the Serengeti
Serengeti National Park / Ikoma
Drive through the Ndutu area on the southern Serengeti plains, famous for cheetah and the calving grounds of the wildebeest migration (best Dec–Mar). Enter Serengeti National Park and pay entry (~£60–75 per person per 24h plus vehicle fee shared). Game drive along the Seronera valley with stops at the Serengeti Visitor Centre. Optional: add a Maasai village visit on the way out of Ngorongoro (~£10–15 directly to the village, booked locally rather than through the tour). Overnight in a permanent tented camp near Seronera or Ikoma.
🚌Shared 4WD with park entry fees, ~£90 shared seat
🛏Permanent tented camp in Serengeti/Ikoma, ~£25/night (can drop to ~£15 basic wild camp)
- →Ndutu plains drive (cheetah country)
- →Serengeti game drive via Seronera
- →Optional Maasai village visit
Serengeti walking safari and afternoon drive
Serengeti National Park
Start with a guided walking safari on the park edge (arranged through your camp or a TANAPA-licensed walking operator, ~£25–35 for 2–3 hours) — a great way to read tracks and see smaller wildlife. Long lunch with a siesta back at camp, then an afternoon game drive in the Serengeti as the light softens. This is the best time for cheetah hunting and leopard on the kopjes. Evening back at camp with dinner and a beer by the fire.
🚌Shared 4WD game drive, ~£60 shared seat
🛏Permanent tented camp in Serengeti, ~£25/night
- →Guided walking safari
- →Afternoon Serengeti game drive
- →Sunset wildlife spotting from camp
Dawn game drive → back to Kilimanjaro Airport
Serengeti / Kilimanjaro
Up at dawn for a final early-morning game drive — the best chance for predators before the heat. Then leave the park and drive back to Moshi/Arusha (~5–6 hours including stops). If you've booked a shared safari seat, this drive is included; otherwise take a shared shuttle or bus from Arusha to Moshi (~£5) and a shared taxi to JRO (~£10). If your flight is later in the day, enjoy a cheap lunch and shower in Moshi before heading to the airport.
🚌Shared 4WD return + shared taxi to JRO, ~£30
🛏None (departure day)
- →Dawn game drive in Serengeti
- →Drive back via Ngorongoro highlands
- →Shared shuttle to JRO

Frequently asked questions
How much does Cheetah Classic Safari: Self-Launched Tanzania Northern Circuit cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £905 per person for 6 days in Tanzania. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with World Adventure Tours?+
Yes — World Adventure Tours charges around £1,645 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £905 — a saving of roughly £740 (45%) per person.
How long is the Tanzania trip?+
This itinerary runs 6 days, covering 6 day-by-day stops through Tanzania.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, wildlife, budget trip through Tanzania, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
