An independent, self-launched version of Explore!'s 8-day Northern Circuit camping safari. You'll follow the same classic route — Arusha, Lake Manyara, Olduvai Gorge, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire — but book it yourself by joining a shared/budget camping safari (widely sold in Arusha) or by hiring a 4WD, driver-guide and camping gear directly. Expect the same big-game highlights at roughly a quarter of the group-tour price. Costs are approximate backpacker/budget-safari rates in GBP and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Arusha — safari briefing and market wander

Arusha

Land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and take a shared shuttle or local dala-dala/bajaji into Arusha town (~£6-10 for the shuttle). Check into a budget guesthouse in the Ilboru or Njiro area. Spend the afternoon exploring Arusha's central market and craft stalls, and if time allows pop into the small natural history museum. In the evening meet your safari operator (or driver-guide, if you're organising your own 4WD) for a pre-departure briefing on the route, camp gear and park fees. Buy a local SIM (Vodafone/Airtel, ~£3) and stock up on water and snacks.

🚌Shared airport shuttle/bus from JRO to Arusha, ~£6-10; local bajaji/dala-dala in town ~£1-2 per trip

🛏Budget guesthouse in Arusha (e.g. small family-run lodge in Ilburu/Njiro area), ~£25-30

  • →Market and craft-stall wander
  • →Natural history museum (optional)
  • →Safari pre-departure briefing

Day 2

Arusha to Lake Manyara — Rift Valley escarpment and afternoon game drive

Lake Manyara National Park

Leave Arusha early with your shared safari 4WD and drive west through the Great Rift Valley escarpment to Lake Manyara. Afternoon game drive in the park — famous for tree-climbing lions, huge baboon troops, flamingos and elephants in the groundwater forest. Overnight at a budget campsite outside the park (e.g. Migungani/similar public campsite or a basic tented camp). If you're doing it independently, book through one of the Arusha budget operators that combine Manyara with Serengeti/Ngorongoro.

🚌Shared 4WD safari vehicle from Arusha to Lake Manyara, ~2.5-3 hr drive

🛏Budget campsite outside Lake Manyara NP (tent + basic facilities), included in shared safari package

  • →Great Rift Valley escarpment viewpoint stop
  • →Afternoon game drive in Lake Manyara National Park
~£150
Day 3

Manyara to Serengeti via Olduvai Gorge

Serengeti National Park

Early start for the long haul across the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the Serengeti. Stop at Olduvai Gorge for the small museum and a guided talk on the early hominid discoveries (~£8-12 entry). Packed lunch at the visitor centre, then enter Serengeti NP at Naabi Hill Gate and game-drive along the plains toward your camp. Long day in the vehicle but the scenery shift from highland farmland to endless plains is the point. Overnight at a public campsite (e.g. Seronera/Nyani area).

🚌Full-day 4WD transfer, ~5-6 hr driving plus game drives

🛏Public campsite inside Serengeti NP (basic tented camping), included in package

  • →Olduvai Gorge museum and viewpoint
  • →Serengeti entry via Naabi Hill Gate
  • →En-route game drive to camp
~£170
Day 4

Full-day Serengeti game drive

Serengeti National Park

Out at dawn for a full day in the Serengeti with a packed lunch — timing and location depend on where the wildlife is (migration routes shift with the seasons). Expect lion prides, cheetah, leopard in the Seronera riverine woodland, and vast herds of wildebeest/zebra if you're there in the migration window (roughly June-October for the western/northern Serengeti). Back to camp for dinner and a fire.

🚌Full-day 4WD game drive from camp

🛏Public campsite inside Serengeti NP, included in package

  • →Sunrise to sunset game drive in Serengeti NP
  • →Packed lunch in the bush

Day 5

Early Serengeti drive, then transfer to Ngorongoro highlands

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Early morning game drive when predators are active, then pack up and drive south back through Naabi Hill Gate into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Arrive at a campsite near the crater rim area by late afternoon. Optional: arrange a short walk with a local villager through a nearby coffee plantation/township for a few pounds — a nice non-wildlife break. Early night, as tomorrow starts before dawn.

🚌4WD transfer Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area, ~3-4 hr

🛏Campsite in Ngorongoro Conservation Area (basic tented camp), included in package

  • →Early morning game drive in Serengeti
  • →Optional coffee-plantation/village walk (~£5-10)

Day 6

Ngorongoro Crater half-day game drive

Ngorongoro Crater

Descend into the crater at dawn via the Malanja route — the highest concentration of wildlife in East Africa: black rhino, lion, elephant, buffalo, flamingo on Lake Magadi. Half-day game drive, then back up the crater wall for lunch and a relaxed afternoon at camp. If you're booking through a shared budget operator this is bundled in; independent travellers need to pre-pay the crater entry plus vehicle fee at the gate.

🚌4WD descent into the crater and back to camp

🛏Campsite in Ngorongoro Conservation Area, included in package

  • →Half-day Ngorongoro Crater game drive
  • →Lake Magadi flamingoes and rhino spotting
~£160
Day 7

Ngorongoro to Tarangire — afternoon game drive and traditional dinner

Tarangire National Park

Drive south-east to Tarangire National Park, famous for its baobabs and huge elephant herds (especially July-October). Afternoon game drive among the river valley and swamps, then overnight at a campsite near the park. Ask your operator to arrange a traditional evening meal locally if you want the same touch as the group tour.

🚌4WD transfer Ngorongoro to Tarangire, ~3-4 hr

🛏Campsite near Tarangire NP, included in package

  • →Afternoon game drive in Tarangire NP
  • →Optional traditional evening meal (~£8-12)

Tarangire to Arusha — departure

Arusha

Morning drive back to Arusha (roughly 2-3 hr), with a possible last game drive en route out of the park. Lunch in Arusha town, then transfer to Arusha Airport or JRO for your flight out. If you're flying the same day, allow at least 3 hours between arrival in Arusha and international departure.

🚌4WD to Arusha, ~£0 (included in package) plus shared shuttle or taxi to JRO ~£8-12

🛏None (departure day)

  • →Last morning game drive en route

Frequently asked questions

How much does Serengeti Wildlife Experience — Self-Launched Northern Circuit Safari cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,255 per person for 8 days in Tanzania. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Explore!?+

Yes — Explore! charges around £4,270 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,255 — a saving of roughly £3,015 (71%) per person.

How long is the Tanzania trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Tanzania.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, budget trip through Tanzania, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
