A do-it-yourself version of the classic 15-day Bangkok–Chiang Mai–Khao Sok–Koh Pha Ngan loop, hitting every highlight of the original small-group tour: Khao San Road, overnight sleepers, Chiang Mai street food and temples, a two-night hilltribe trek with bamboo rafting, the community farm near Khao Thep Pitak, Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok, and the Full Moon Party on Koh Pha Ngan. You book your own hostels, guesthouses and train tickets and join locally run treks, boat trips and cooking classes through GetYourGuide, Klook or your guesthouse — a fraction of the group tour price. Costs are approximate backpacker rates in GBP and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Sawatdee Bangkok — Khao San Road warm-up

Bangkok

Arrive at Suvarnabhumi and get into town cheaply: the Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai (~60 THB/£1.40) then BTS/MRT, or a metered taxi with expressway tolls for roughly 350–500 THB (£8–11). Check into a hostel around Khao San or Banglamphu. In the evening walk Khao San Road, grab a pad thai from a street cart (£1.50) and a big Chang beer (£2), and suss out your onward train tickets at the TAT or any travel agent. If you only have 30 days or fewer in Thailand, most nationalities enter visa-free.

In the afternoon take a longtail boat through the Thonburi klongs — charter a boat for around 1,000–1,500 THB per boat (£23–35) and split it with people from your hostel, or use the Chao Phraya orange-flag commuter boat for 16 THB. Board the overnight sleeper train from Krung Thep Aphiwat (Bang Sue) to Chiang Mai — second-class sleeper berth roughly 800–1,000 THB (£18–23), about 12–13 hours. Drive to Mae Malai village, then set off on foot through forest towards the first hilltribe village. Frequently asked questions

How much does Thailand: Forest Treks & Full Moon Party — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £652 per person for 15 days in Thailand. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,750 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £652 — a saving of roughly £1,098 (63%) per person.

How long is the Thailand trip?+

This itinerary runs 15 days, covering 15 day-by-day stops through Thailand.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, backpacker, budget trip through Thailand, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
