Discover Transylvania — self-launched
3 days · Transylvania, Romania
Visit Transilvania Travel charges £780
No-markup version: ~£162 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched version of the 3-day Bucharest–Brașov–Sighișoara–Sibiu loop, replacing the guided minivan tour with Romania's cheap and surprisingly good rail network, self-guided walks around the fortified towns, and direct-entry tickets for Peleș, Bran and the UNESCO sites. Base yourself two nights in Brașov's old town and day-trip by train to Sighișoara and Sibiu — or (recommended) split the second night between Sighișoara and Sibiu if you don't mind moving. Costs are approximate per person based on 2025 budget-traveller rates; solo travellers benefit most from hostels and dorms since the original tour won't run for one person.
Day-by-day
Bucharest → Peleș Castle → Brașov old town
Bucharest / Sinaia / Brașov
Start early at Bucharest Gara de Nord. Take a direct IR/IC train to Sinaia (~1h45, roughly £6–9 booked on CFR Călători or the CFR app). From Sinaia station it's a 25–30 min uphill walk (or a £2 taxi) to Peleș Castle; buy the standard ground-floor ticket online or at the gate (~£8–10) and arrive at opening to dodge the queues. Later, hop a 45-min regional train from Sinaia to Brașov (~£3). Check into a hostel or guesthouse just inside the old-town walls, then do the medieval quarter on foot with a free/self-guided walking route: Council Square (Piața Sfatului), the Black Church (small entry fee, closed Sundays), the White and Black Towers, Weaver's Bastion, Ecaterina's Gate, St Nicholas Church and the narrow Rope Street (Strada Sforii). Evening: goulash and papanasi at a bistrot on Piața Sfatului.
🚌CFR train Bucharest Gara de Nord → Sinaia (~1h45, £6–9); regional train Sinaia → Brașov (~45min, £3); everything in Brașov on foot
🛏Hostel or 3* guesthouse in Brașov old town (dorm £12–16, private double £30–40)
- →Peleș Castle self-guided visit (book online)
- →Sinaia station-to-castle walk
- →Self-guided Brașov medieval old town walk: Council Square, Black Church, White & Black Towers, Weaver's Bastion, Ecaterina's Gate, St Nicholas Church, Rope Street
Sighișoara & Sibiu by rail
Sighișoara / Sibiu / Brașov
Catch an early train from Brașov to Sighișoara (~1h40–2h, £5–7). Walk the hilltop citadel yourself: the Clock Tower museum (~£3), the Scholars' Stairs up to the Church on the Hill (~£2), and the birthplace house of Vlad the Impaler. Optional short detours: Rupea fortress or the fortified church at Saschiz (local bus or a shared-taxi hop, £2–4 each way) if you have time. Continue by train Sighișoara → Sibiu (~2h, £5–7) and self-walk the Saxon old town: Big Square, Small Square, the Staircase Tower, Liar's Bridge, the Evangelical Cathedral tower climb, plus the Catholic and Orthodox cathedrals and surviving medieval walls. Return to Brașov by IC train (~2h30, £7–10) — or, if you'd rather not backtrack, book a cheap Sibiu hostel instead and return to Bucharest on day 3 via the Olt Valley line. Grab a late dinner near your accommodation.
🚌Train Brașov → Sighișoara (~1h45, £5–7); train Sighișoara → Sibiu (~2h, £5–7); train Sibiu → Brașov (~2h30, £7–10); all tickets on the CFR Călători app or at the station
🛏Second night in Brașov hostel/guesthouse, or budget hostel in Sibiu old town (£12–18 dorm, £28–38 private)

- →Self-guided Sibiu old town walk: Big Square, Small Square, Staircase Tower, Liar's Bridge, Evangelical Cathedral, Catholic & Orthodox cathedrals
Bran Castle & Prejmer, back to Bucharest
Bran / Prejmer / Bucharest
Leave bags at your accommodation and take a direct train or bus from Brașov to Bran (bus #20 from Autogara Bartolomeu or the Brașov–Bran bus, ~45 min, £2–3; train to Zărnești then a short bus also works). Get to Bran Castle at opening (~£9–11 entry) — the Dracula association is marketing, but the interior and the view from the tower are worth it, and the souvenir stalls outside are the best in the region. Continue to Prejmer (bus back toward Brașov, then a local bus or 15-min taxi, ~£3–4) for the UNESCO fortified church with its 270-guestroom ring wall (~£2–3). Collect your bags in Brașov and take an afternoon IC train back to Bucharest Gara de Nord (~2h30, £9–13), arriving early evening — or aim for an evening train if you're flying home the same day.
🚌Local bus Brașov → Bran (~45min, £2–3); shared taxi/bus Bran → Prejmer (~£3–4); IC train Brașov → Bucharest Gara de Nord (~2h30, £9–13)

Frequently asked questions
How much does Discover Transylvania — self-launched cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £162 per person for 3 days in Transylvania, Romania. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Visit Transilvania Travel?+
Yes — Visit Transilvania Travel charges around £780 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £162 — a saving of roughly £618 (79%) per person.
How long is the Transylvania, Romania trip?+
This itinerary runs 3 days, covering 3 day-by-day stops through Transylvania, Romania.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a culture, budget, city-breaks trip through Transylvania, Romania, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
