Self-Launched Transylvania Winter Walk & Snowshoe

Fly into Henri Coandă International Airport, Bucharest. The most budget-friendly way to reach Mâgura (approx. 165km away) is to take a train from Bucharest Nord station to Brașov (~2.5 hrs, ~£8), then a local bus or shared taxi onward to Zărnești (~45 min, ~£3), and finally a local taxi or arranged guesthouse pickup to Mâgura (~20 min, ~£5–8). Book a room at a local guesthouse such as Pensiunea Mâgura or a comparable B&B in Mâgura or Zărnești. Settle in and enjoy a traditional Romanian dinner of local cheese, cured meats and bread at the guesthouse or a village tavern. Toast the adventure with a glass of țuică (homemade plum brandy).

After breakfast at your guesthouse, head out on foot along the marked trail from Mâgura to the nearby village of Peștera (~12km / 7.5 miles round trip). The trail passes through snow-covered pastures and forest, and you'll walk by the bat-hibernation cave — don't enter, but pause to appreciate the landscape. Stop for a warm lunch at a local pub in Peștera (traditional Romanian soups and mains are very affordable). Return to Mâgura on foot or hitch a lift with a local. Start from your guesthouse and hike up to Dealul Măgurice (1,300m / 4,265ft) through forest and open meadows blanketed in snow (~8km / 5 miles). Keep an eye out for wolf, lynx and bear tracks — this is prime Carpathian wildlife territory. On the way back, stop at a local farm to chat with farmers about life in rural Transylvania; many are very welcoming to independent travellers and a small gift or purchase of homemade produce is appreciated. In the evening, read up on Carpathian farming and the human-wildlife co-existence — the Fundația ADEPT website has excellent background material.

Today's the big one — a 20km / 12.4-mile snowshoe or winter hike across the high plateau between the Piatra Craiului and Bucegi mountain ranges. Rent snowshoes and poles independently from outdoor hire shops in Zărnești (e.g. at the Zărnești Gorge trailhead area, ~£10–15/day). The trails are marked with red/blue waymarkers. Start early, carry a packed lunch from your guesthouse and plenty of water. The plateau in winter is serene and remote — dress in layers and carry a map. Return to Mâgura by late afternoon.

Take a local taxi or bus from Mâgura/Zărnești to the Libearty Bear Sanctuary (Asociația Milioane de Prieteni), Europe's largest brown bear rescue centre. Book tickets in advance online at millionsfriends.org (~£12–15). After approximately an hour walking the sanctuary with an included guide, arrange a local taxi or hired car to the Saxon village of Vulcan to see its fortified church. Then head into Brașov (~30 min by bus from Vulcan area) for a wander around the beautifully preserved medieval old town — the Black Church, Council Square and city walls are all free. Have dinner at one of Brașov's excellent traditional restaurants (try Sergiana or equivalent, ~£8–12). Return to Mâgura by bus or taxi.

Set off on foot from Mâgura on the marked hiking trail towards Bran (~13km / 8.1 miles). The route descends through snowy forests and farmland with views of the Piatra Craiului ridge. On arrival in Bran, visit Bran Castle — book tickets online in advance at bran-castle.com (~£8–10). It's easy to see why Bram Stoker chose this turreted Gothic fortress as the home of Count Dracula. Browse the vampire-themed souvenir market nearby for some kitsch mementos. Arrange a local bus or taxi back to Mâgura in the afternoon (~£5). Enjoy a home-cooked dinner at the guesthouse.

The grand finale hike: walk or take a short taxi from Mâgura to the entrance of Prăpăstiile Zărnești (Zărnești Gorge), a spectacular Jurassic-era limestone canyon. Hire snowshoes again if needed (~£10–15 from Zărnești). Walk through the dramatic gorge (descent ~200m), then ascend ~700m up to Cabana Curmătura mountain hut beneath the Piatra Craiului peaks — a stunning reward. If weather or ice makes the cabin unreachable, take the alternative forest return route to Mâgura. Total distance ~15km / 9.3 miles. Celebrate the final night with a farewell dinner at the guesthouse or local tavern.

Alternatively, book a direct private transfer from Mâgura to Bucharest Airport via a local taxi company (expect ~£45–60 shared between passengers — great if travelling with others met during the week).
