A self-launched, DIY version of the classic Tunisie Voyages "Tunisia Discovery" 6-day loop — from Hammamet through Kairouan, the Chott el Djerid salt lake, Douz and Matmata, El Djem, Sousse, Sidi Bou Said, Carthage and Tunis — booked and travelled independently using louages (shared minibuses), the SNCFT train, local guides via GetYourGuide and budget guesthouses. Same sites, same route, roughly a third of the group tour price.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Tunis → Hammamet

Hammamet

Land at Tunis-Carthage Airport and make your own way to Hammamet rather than relying on a hotel pickup. Take the TGM/light rail or a taxi into Tunis city, or head straight to the bus station. From Tunis's Gare Routière Sud (Bab Alioua) there are frequent buses and louages to Hammamet (roughly 1h30, ~£5). Check into a budget guesthouse in Yasmine Hammamet or the old town (medina). Spend the late afternoon wandering the beaches and the Yasmine Hammamet marina, then eat a cheap local dinner of brik, harissa and grilled fish.

🚌Bus or louage Tunis → Hammamet, ~£5

Day 2

Hammamet → Kairouan → Tozeur

Tozeur

A big travel day. Take an early louage or bus to Kairouan (~1h, ~£3) and base yourself for a few hours. Join a self-bookable walking tour of the old Medina via GetYourGuide (~£15) or simply explore it independently. Visit the Great Mosque of Kairouan (ticket ~£3) and the Aghlabid Basins just outside the walls (~£2). In the afternoon continue by louage to Tozeur via Gafsa (long, ~5-6h, ~£10-12 total, with a change at Gafsa). Check into a guesthouse in Tozeur's oasis and grab a cheap dinner of couscous and dates.

Day 3

Tozeur → Chott el Djerid → Douz

Douz

Book a shared 4x4 day trip or a seat in a local excursion to cross the Chott el Djerid salt lake (~£20-25 per person if shared). The drive across the salt flats takes 1.5-2h with photo stops. Continue to Douz, the 'Gateway to the Sahara'. Optional extras that travellers on the group tour raved about: a camel ride at sunset (~£10) and a 4x4 dune excursion into the Sahara edge (~£25). Stay in a small budget hotel or desert camp in Douz.

Explore the troglodyte cave houses independently or with a local guide (~£5), and stop at the Sidi Driss hotel — the Star Wars Lars homestead filming location. Continue to El Djem (louage, ~£5) to see the Roman amphitheatre (ticket ~£5). Finally take a louage or train to Sousse (~£4). Stay in a budget hotel near Sousse's medina.

Continue by TGM to Carthage (~£1) and visit the archaeological site and Antonine Baths with a combined ticket (~£6). Back in Tunis, explore the Bardo National Museum (~£6) and the ancient Medina, ending at the souk and Zitouna Mosque. Base yourself centrally in Tunis rather than the isolated Gammarth area so you can walk to sights — a common complaint in the group tour's reviews.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Tunisia Discovery — Self-Launched Small Group Adventure cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £305 per person for 6 days in Tunisia. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Tunisie Voyages?+

Yes — Tunisie Voyages charges around £1,080 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £305 — a saving of roughly £775 (72%) per person.

How long is the Tunisia trip?+

This itinerary runs 6 days, covering 6 day-by-day stops through Tunisia.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, budget, backpacker trip through Tunisia, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
