A do-it-yourself version of Tour Altinkum Travel's 11-day "Magnificent Turkey & 3 Nights Iconic Aegean" tour: Istanbul's imperial sights, the fairy chimneys and underground cities of Cappadocia, ancient Ephesus, the travertines of Pamukkale, then a hop across the Aegean to Patmos, Crete, Santorini and Athens. Instead of private coaches, domestic flights booked with tour operators, and an all-in package, you'll use Turkey's excellent low-cost airlines, the intercity bus network, municipal ferries, and self-booked day tours (GetYourGuide/Klook/your guesthouse) — staying in well-located hostels, pensions and cave guesthouses along the way. Costs are rough backpacker estimates in GBP and exclude international flights to/from Istanbul.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Istanbul – Sultanahmet on foot

Istanbul

Land at Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) and take the Havaist airport bus or metro/Marmaray into Sultanahmet (roughly £3–5). Check into a hostel or small pension in Sultanahmet or Beyoğlu. Spend the afternoon wandering the Hippodrome, the exterior of the Blue Mosque and the gardens between Hagia Sophia and Topkapı, then catch sunset over the Golden Horn from the Galata Bridge with a cheap balık ekmek (fish sandwich). Buy an Istanbulkart for discounted public transport.

🚌Havaist bus or metro + Marmaray from airport (~£3–5); tram/tram-hopping on Istanbulkart

🛏Hostel dorm or small pension in Sultanahmet/Beyoğlu (~£15–22/night)

  • →Hippodrome Square walk
  • →Galata Bridge sunset
  • →Istanbulkart purchase

Day 2

Istanbul highlights – Hagia Sophia, Topkapı, Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar

Istanbul

Do the classic Istanbul circuit independently, all within walking distance of Sultanahmet. Pre-book timed tickets online for Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace (skip the touts) or join a small-group walking tour on GetYourGuide (~£25–35) if you want the history explained. Add the Basilica Cistern if time allows. Finish in the Grand Bazaar and, in the evening, take the tram to Eminönü for a Bosphorus commuter ferry ride (~£1) — the cheapest boat tour in the city.

Fly to Cappadocia – Göreme village afternoon

Göreme, Cappadocia

Book a morning budget flight from Istanbul (IST or SAW) to Kayseri (ASR) on Pegasus, AJet or Turkish Airlines (roughly £25–45 one-way if booked ahead). From Kayseri airport take the Havaş shuttle to Göreme (~£4) or the local bus to Nevşehir then a dolmuş. Settle into a cave guesthouse in Göreme and spend the afternoon walking to Göreme Panorama and Sunset Point, or rent a scooter/bike. Book your hot-air balloon flight for tomorrow morning tonight — prices are far lower booked locally or via GetYourGuide in low season.

🛏Cave guesthouse/hostel in Göreme (~£18–25/night)

  • →Göreme village wander
  • →Göreme Panorama viewpoint

Day 4

Cappadocia green & red valleys – underground city, Devrent, Paşabağ

Cappadocia

Join a small-group Green Tour or Red Tour (GetYourGuide/Klook, ~£30–40 including lunch) — this covers the Underground City of Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu, Ihlara Valley or Devrent Valley, Paşabağ (Monks Valley), Uçhisar Castle and Çavuşin, with hotel pickup. Alternatively, hire a car-share or use dolmuşes independently. Optional extras: sunrise hot-air balloon (~£130–180 booked locally) or a Turkish night show in Avanos. Try a pottery workshop in Avanos — many ateliers welcome walk-ins for a small fee.

🚌Included in small-group day tour; or dolmuş between villages (~£5)

Day 5

Cappadocia to Izmir / Kuşadası

Kuşadası

Morning free for Rose Valley or Pigeon Valley walk (easy, signposted trails from Göreme). Midday Havaş shuttle back to Kayseri, then a budget flight to Izmir (ADB) — or take the overnight intercity bus from Nevşehir to Izmir (~13 hours, £18–25) if you want to save. From Izmir, the İZBAN train or a bus gets you to Selçuk (Ephesus) in ~1 hour (~£1.50), or continue to Kuşadası by bus. Base yourself in Selçuk for cheap guesthouses and easy Ephesus access; Kuşadası is better for the cruise-port vibe.

🚌Havaş to Kayseri + flight to Izmir (~£30–50); İZBAN train Izmir–Selçuk (~£1.50)

🛏Guesthouse in Selçuk or Kuşadası (~£18–25/night)

  • →Rose Valley / Pigeon Valley walk
  • →Selçuk town evening

Day 6

Ephesus, House of the Virgin Mary & Temple of Artemis

Selçuk / Kuşadası

Walk or take a dolmuş to the Ephesus upper gate early (opens ~08:00) to beat the cruise crowds. Buy the Ephesus ticket on site or via Klook (~£18). A self-guided audio tour app is a cheap alternative to a guide. Afterwards take a taxi or dolmuş up to the House of the Virgin Mary (~£8 entry) and visit the scant remains of the Temple of Artemis. Back in Selçuk, see the Basilica of St John and the Ephesus Museum, then dinner at a lokanta.

Day 7

Pamukkale & Hierapolis day trip

Pamukkale / Denizli

Take the early train or bus from Selçuk/Izmir towards Denizli (~3–4 hours, £6–10), then a dolmuş up to Pamukkale village. Buy the combined Pamukkale + Hierapolis ticket (~£30) and spend the day walking the white travertines (barefoot), the ancient theatre, the necropolis and Cleopatra's Antique Pool (optional swim, extra fee). Return to Selçuk/Kuşadası in the evening, or overnight in Pamukkale village for a sunrise-on-the-travertines start.

🚌Train/bus Selçuk–Denizli (~£6–10) + dolmuş

🛏Selçuk/Kuşadası guesthouse (or Pamukkale pension ~£18)

  • →Pamukkale travertines
  • →Hierapolis ancient city
  • →Antique Pool
~£75
Day 8

Ferry to the Greek islands – Patmos / Samos

Patmos or Samos, Greece

Rather than a packaged Celestyal cruise, hop the Aegean independently. From Kuşadası take a ferry to Samos (Vathy or Pythagoreio, ~1.5 hours, £25–35 in season) or a seasonal ferry/excursion boat to Patmos. From Samos, onward ferries connect to Patmos, Lipsi, Leros and Kos. Overnight on Samos or Patmos in a small guesthouse, and enjoy a Greek taverna dinner — this is the point where the DIY route beats the cruise for freedom and price.

🚌Ferry Kuşadası–Samos (~£25–35)

🛏Greek island guesthouse/studio (~£30–40/night)

  • →Ferry across the Aegean
  • →Pythagoreio or Vathy harbour wander
  • →Taverna dinner
~£95
Day 9

Island hopping towards Crete

Samos / Patmos / Kos / Crete

Take a morning island ferry onward — Patmos to Kos is ~2.5 hours (£20–30), or Samos to Kos via the Dodecanese route. From Kos take an overnight or fast ferry to Heraklion, Crete (fast ferry ~4–5 hours, ~£40–55; book on Ferryhopper or with Blue Star/Seajets). Alternatively, fly Kos–Heraklion with a budget airline for as little as £25 if you book early — often cheaper than the ferry.

🚌Island ferry Kos–Heraklion (~£40–55) or budget flight (~£25)

🛏Guesthouse or hostel in Heraklion (~£28–38/night)

  • →Island hop ferry
  • →Kos harbour stroll
  • →Arrival in Heraklion
~£90
Day 10

Knossos & Heraklion, then ferry to Santorini (or Athens)

Heraklion / Santorini

Morning at Knossos — bus #2 from Heraklion bus station (~£2) plus entry (~£16), or a GetYourGuide half-day tour (~£30). Explore the Heraklion Archaeological Museum (home of the Phaistos Disc) and the old town. Late afternoon take the fast ferry Heraklion–Santorini (Thira, ~2 hours, ~£45–60) to see Santorini at a fraction of cruise-excursion hassle, or skip the island and sail straight to Athens overnight instead — many travellers find Santorini by cruise excursion disappointing (late arrival, crowded cable-car path) and it's far better visited independently.

🚌Bus to Knossos (~£2); fast ferry Heraklion–Santorini (~£45–60)

🛏Hostel/guesthouse in Fira or Karterados, Santorini (~£30–45) — or onboard overnight ferry to Athens

  • →Knossos Palace
  • →Heraklion Archaeological Museum
  • →Heraklion old town
  • →Ferry to Santorini
~£110
Day 11

Santorini sunrise, then Athens & flight home (or straight to Athens)

Santorini / Athens

Catch sunrise on the caldera rim in Fira or hike the Fira–Oia cliff path (2–3 hours, free, stunning). Mid-morning take the ferry or a budget flight Santorini–Athens (~£30–50 flight, ~£40–55 ferry). If time allows, drop bags and walk the Acropolis area, Plaka and Monastiraki before your onward international flight. If you're flying home from Istanbul instead, book a cheap Athens–Istanbul flight (~£30–45) — or simply reverse the original tour and end where you started.

🚌Santorini–Athens ferry (~£40–55) or budget flight (~£30–50)

🛏Not included — onward flight home (or optional Athens hostel ~£25)

  • →Fira–Oia caldera hike
  • →Acropolis exterior / Plaka walk (if time)
  • →Monastiraki market

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Turkey & Iconic Aegean: Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, Pamukkale & Greek Islands cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £930 per person for 11 days in Turkey & Greece. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Tour Altinkum Travel?+

Yes — Tour Altinkum Travel charges around £2,035 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £930 — a saving of roughly £1,105 (54%) per person.

How long is the Turkey & Greece trip?+

This itinerary runs 11 days, covering 11 day-by-day stops through Turkey & Greece.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, backpacker trip through Turkey & Greece, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
