Experience the very best of Turkey independently — from the minarets and bazaars of Istanbul to the Mediterranean coastline, the surreal white terraces of Pamukkale, and the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia. Day 1

Arrival in Istanbul

Arrive into Istanbul Atatürk or Sabiha Gökçen airport. Take the metro or Havaist bus into the city centre (£3–5). Check into your hostel in the Sultanahmet or Beyoğlu neighbourhood — both are well-connected and full of character. Spend your first afternoon wandering the streets of the Old City: grab a simit from a street vendor, hunt down a proper doner kebab and finish with a glass of çay (Turkish tea). The Blue Mosque is free to enter and stunning at dusk. Head out for dinner with fellow travellers you meet at the hostel.

Istanbul Old City Exploration

Spend the day exploring Istanbul's incredible historical peninsula. You don't need a guide — the area is extremely walkable and well-signed. Start at the Hagia Sophia (book tickets online in advance, ~£25), then cross the square to the Blue Mosque (free). Walk down to the Basilica Cistern and then through the Grand Bazaar — perfect for souvenir shopping and people-watching. Cross the Galata Bridge on foot, watching fishermen cast their lines, and climb up to the Galata Tower for panoramic city views (~£30). End the evening in a rooftop bar in Beyoğlu.

Istanbul to Çanakkale via Gallipoli

Take an early Metro Turizm or Kamil Koç bus from Istanbul's Esenler Otogar (bus station) to Çanakkale — the bus includes a ferry crossing of the Dardanelles (total ~5.5 hours, ~£15–18). En route or on arrival, join a self-booked Gallipoli battlefields tour — these depart daily from Çanakkale and are excellent value. The tour covers ANZAC Cove, Lone Pine Cemetery, Chunuk Bair and more, with knowledgeable local guides. Tonight, explore Çanakkale's lively waterfront — it's a university town with a great atmosphere.

Troy Ruins & Drive to Selçuk

Buy your ticket at the gate (~£20–25) and explore at your own pace using a free map or the official app. Highlights include the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, the Temple of Hadrian and the marble-paved streets. Nearby, the Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) is a short walk away. In the afternoon, take a dolmuş up to the hilltop village of Şirince (~£2) and sample local fruit wines. Alternatively, head to Kuşadası beach for a swim.

Pamukkale Sunrise & Drive to Kaş

Then hop on a bus south towards the Mediterranean coast. Kaş is a gorgeous, relaxed coastal town perched on the Med. Today is a highlight of the whole trip. Join a shared day sailing trip along the Lycian coastline from Kaş — these run daily and are easy to book at the harbour or via GetYourGuide. The typical route includes the mysterious sunken ruins of Kekova (a partially submerged ancient Lycian city), Lycian rock tombs, secluded swimming coves and lunch cooked on board. Prices include a home-cooked lunch and snorkelling stops. Return to Kaş in the late afternoon with plenty of time for a free evening — grab a cold Efes beer at a harbour-side bar.

Walk the cobblestone streets of Kaleiçi, visit Hadrian's Gate (free), explore the Roman harbour and consider a stop at the Antalya Museum (one of Turkey's best, ~£8). Antalya to Konya

After a leisurely breakfast in Antalya, catch a morning bus north to Konya (~4 hours, ~£10–14). Konya is the spiritual heart of Turkey — the birthplace of Sufism and home of the 13th-century mystic poet Rumi. The unmissable Mevlâna Museum and Mausoleum (Rumi's tomb) is covered in turquoise tiles and one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Turkey (~£3–5). Stroll around the museum gardens, then explore the Aziziye and Alaaddin mosques. Ask your guesthouse host where locals go for Konya's famous fırın kebabı (oven-roasted lamb). Check if there's a sema (whirling dervish) performance on tonight — they sometimes run for free at the Cultural Centre.

Take a morning bus from Konya to Göreme in Cappadocia (~4 hours, ~£10–14). The landscape becomes increasingly surreal as you approach — vast plains suddenly give way to otherworldly volcanic rock formations. Check into your cave hotel or guesthouse (a Cappadocia staple!) and head straight out to the underground city of Kaymaklı (~£8), one of the 36 known underground cities carved into the earth thousands of years ago. Stop at Pigeon Valley and Devrent Valley (both free, accessible by dolmuş or scooter rental). In the evening, ask your accommodation host to recommend a local family dinner experience — many guesthouses in Göreme offer home-cooked meals or can connect you with local families (~£15–25).

Set your alarm for 4:30am — this could be the most memorable morning of the trip. Book a hot air balloon flight directly with a local operator in Göreme (Butterfly Balloons and Royal Balloon are reputable choices) or via GetYourGuide. Standard flights (~£150–200, deluxe ~£220–250) lift off at sunrise and float over the fairy chimneys, valleys and cave villages — truly bucket-list stuff. Not keen on heights? Walk up to the Uçhisar Castle or any of the ridge viewpoints to watch the sky fill with balloons for free. The rest of the day is entirely free — hire a scooter (~£25/day), explore the rose and red valleys on foot, browse the carpet and ceramics shops in Göreme, or simply sit at a rooftop café and enjoy the views. Start at the Göreme Open Air Museum (~£12), a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with rock-cut Byzantine churches and cave dwellings with remarkably well-preserved frescoes. Then tackle the Red Valley Hike — a spectacular 2–3 hour trail through Meskendir and Rose Valley past cave churches, orchards and sandstone spires glowing in the sun. In town, browse the markets for handmade ceramics, Turkish carpets and mosaic lamps. Tonight, board a night bus from Göreme or Nevşehir back to Istanbul (~10–12 hours). Arrive back into Istanbul's Esenler Otogar in the morning (~8–9am). Drop your bags at your hostel (most will allow early luggage storage) and refresh before heading back out into the city. Use this day to catch anything you missed — the Spice Bazaar (Egyptian Bazaar) in Eminönü is great for a browse and a çay, or take a public ferry across the Bosphorus to the Asian side (Kadıköy or Üsküdar) for a completely different feel. Kadıköy is full of cool cafés, street art and excellent food. Head back across as the sun sets and spend your last evening on a rooftop terrace in Beyoğlu.
