This self-launched version of Intrepid's popular 20-day Vietnam to Cambodia trip follows the same incredible route — from Hanoi's buzzing streets to Angkor Wat's ancient temples — but swaps group tour mark-ups for local buses, trains, hostels and self-bookable experiences. Visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex and the serene Temple of Literature independently — both easily walkable or a short xe om (motorbike taxi) ride. The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is also well worth a visit. For lunch, head to KOTO on Van Mieu Street — a social enterprise training disadvantaged youth in hospitality.

Hanoi to Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba is the gateway to the spectacular Lan Ha Bay, a quieter and equally stunning neighbour to Ha Long Bay. Book a day cruise around Lan Ha Bay with kayaking through a local agency on Cat Ba town's main strip — these are widely available and much cheaper than pre-booking. Watch the sunset over the karst-studded bay from your guesthouse balcony.

Take a public/tourist bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh — several operators run this route daily (Giant Ibis is the most reliable, Mekong Express also good). Book in advance online at giantibis.com (~£10–14). The journey takes around 6–8 hours including two border crossings (Moc Bai/Bavet). You'll need a Cambodia e-visa (~£25, apply at evisa.gov.kh at least 3 days in advance). On arrival in Phnom Penh, take a tuk-tuk to your guesthouse (~£3–4) and do a short orientation walk around the riverfront.

Sambor Prei Kuk is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed pre-Angkorian temple complex and one of Cambodia's most underrated sites. Rent a bicycle from your guesthouse (~£1–2) and cycle through rice fields to the atmospheric jungle-surrounded temples. This is an exceptional off-the-beaten-track experience.
