Start early with the Punta Mesco trail from Levanto to Monterosso (c. 2.5hrs, free to walk independently — just bring water and sturdy shoes). The path passes the 11th-century hermitage ruins with sweeping Ligurian Sea views. In Monterosso, grab lunch and explore the old town before returning to Levanto by train (£2). In the afternoon, rent a bike in Levanto and ride the old railway tunnel cycling path south to Framura — a flat, scenic 8km route through five converted tunnels. In Portovenere, explore the striped 12th-century church of San Pietro on the rocky headland and the Doria Castle. Wild West Walk & Travel to Santa Margherita Ligure

The 'Wild West Walk' (sentiero costiero) heads north from Levanto through Bonassola and Framura to Costa and Deiva Marina — a beautiful 10km coastal path through macchia scrubland with plenty of swimming spots. Walk all or part of it, then continue by train to Santa Margherita Ligure (~£8 from Levanto). Check in to your new base and enjoy a gelato evening stroll around the pretty harbour.

Take the boat back to Camogli (Golfo Paradiso ferries, ~£8) and explore its pastel-painted fishermen's houses and pebble beach. Option 2 (relaxed): Train direct to Camogli and take the ferry to the Abbey and back. Either way, end with a gelato or Campari in Camogli's harbour before the train back to Santa Margherita (~£3).
