A self-launched take on The Tuk Tuk Club's 11-day Northern Thailand adventure. Instead of a guided tuk-tuk convoy, you ride the same mountain loop (the classic Mae Hong Son Route 1095/108 circuit) solo — on a rented scooter or Honda Click where you're licensed and insured, or by local songthaew and public minibus where you're not. You get the same highlights: a hilltop temple blessing, the Mae Wang elephant sanctuary and bamboo rafting, Doi Inthanon's summit and cloud forest, hill-tribe village bungalows, the Mae Sariang river town, Mae Hong Son's lake and Wat Doi Kong Mu, the Lod Caves, and Pai's slow afternoons. Costs assume a backpacker-level mix of guesthouses and simple hotels with comfort roughly matching the operator's 3-star stays, self-booked via Booking/Agoda and activities arranged direct or through GetYourGuide/Klook. Transport and road days are the main planning variable — allow flexibility for monsoon-season rain or smoke season (Feb–Apr) haze.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Chiang Mai, bless the bike, head for Mae Wang

Chiang Mai → Mae Wang

Land or wake up in Chiang Mai's Old City. Collect a pre-booked scooter (or ask your guesthouse to arrange a licensed driver for the loop if you don't have a valid IDP Category A plus motorbike entitlement — note the operator's own IDP requirement). Have a proper Thai lunch at a shophouse near Chiang Mai Gate, then ride southwest on Route 1013/108 (~1hr) to Mae Wang. Settle into a homestay or simple hotel, then take a short acclimatising ride on the quiet country lanes before visiting a hilltop temple for a blessing and sunset. Dinner at a Thai 'country pub'-style spot with live music near the river.

🚌Local songthaew from Chiang Mai Arcade/Chang Phueak to Mae Wang ~£3-4, or scooter hire ~£8-12/day plus fuel ~£2-3

🛏Homestay or small 2-3* guesthouse in Mae Wang (private room, ensuite)

  • →Scooter pickup and safety check in Chiang Mai
  • →Local Thai lunch at Chiang Mai Gate market
  • →Hilltop temple blessing and sunset
  • →Scenic country-lane ride into Mae Wang

Day 2

Elephants and bamboo rafting on the Mae Wang river

Mae Wang

Book an ethical, no-riding elephant experience direct with one of the Mae Wang sanctuary projects (roughly 1,800-2,500 THB / £40-55 for a half or full day including lunch) — the same model the operator uses: feeding, education with mahouts, walking with elephants to the river and observing bathing. Afternoon bamboo raft float down the Mae Wang. Alternatively book through Klook/GetYourGuide if you'd rather have transfer included. Evening: multi-dish family-run Thai restaurant dinner.

🚌Scooter or sanctuary pickup included with activity

🛏Homestay or small 2-3* guesthouse in Mae Wang

  • →Elephant sanctuary half/full day: feeding, walking, river bathing observation
  • →Bamboo raft float downstream

Day 3

Ride the hills to Doi Inthanon's hill-tribe village

Mae Wang → Mae Klang Luang / Doi Inthanon

Ride Route 1013 south and west, gaining altitude through hill-tribe villages with coffee and snack stops (this is the same road the tuk-tuk convoy uses). Base yourself in a bungalow in Mae Klang Luang village at the foot of Doi Inthanon. For the summit, leave the bike and take a songthaew or join a shared tour up — the park road is genuinely steep and mist-prone. Walk the Ang Ka Luang cloud-forest boardwalk, see the twin royal chedis and gardens, then return for a traditional Thai BBQ dinner overlooking the rice terraces.

🚌Scooter ~70km; park entry ~£6 plus songthaew/charter to summit ~£15-20 shared

🛏Hill-tribe village bungalow, Mae Klang Luang (simple, hot water, blankets)

Day 4

Waterfalls, rice terraces and mountain coffee

Doi Inthanon

Self-guided hike on the well-marked trails around Mae Klang Luang and the lower park — the classic route passes Wachirathan and Siriphum waterfalls, rice terraces and hill-tribe farms. Take a packed lunch from your bungalow (banana-leaf wrapped from a village shop). Afternoon: coffee tasting at a local mountain-roastery, then a slow village evening with a home-style Thai dinner.

🚌On foot plus scooter for waterfall hops; optional local guide ~£15

🛏Hill-tribe village bungalow, Mae Klang Luang

  • →Self-guided 5-8km hike with waterfalls
  • →Rice terrace walk
  • →Local mountain coffee tasting
  • →Waterfall swim stop
~£40
Day 5

Down the 108 to the river town of Mae Sariang

Doi Inthanon → Mae Sariang

A big road day north-west on Route 108 — around 140km of forested curves. Take it slow with frequent coffee and viewpoint stops, or do it by public minibus/songthaew if you'd rather not ride the full stretch. Mae Sariang is a sleepy Burmese-influenced town on the Yuam River: temples (Wat Chom Thong, Wat Sri Bunrueang), a riverside pool for a swim, and excellent night-market street food.

🚌Scooter ~140km (fuel ~£5); or public minibus Chiang Mai–Mae Sariang ~£6-8

🛏Riverside guesthouse or 3* hotel in Mae Sariang

  • →Route 108 mountain ride with scenic stops
  • →Explore Mae Sariang temples
  • →Riverside swim
  • →Night-market street food crawl
~£42
Day 6

Mae Sariang to Mae Hong Son

Mae Sariang → Mae Hong Son

Continue north on the 108 through the mountains — this is some of the best riding in Thailand. Break frequently at hill viewpoints and roadside coffee huts. Arrive Mae Hong Son mid-afternoon, check into a bungalow resort by the river or lake, and have a low-key evening at the night market.

🚌Scooter ~165km (fuel ~£5), or public minibus ~£7-9

🛏Garden bungalow resort near the lake, Mae Hong Son

  • →Mountain ride Mae Sariang–Mae Hong Son
  • →Hill viewpoint and coffee stops
  • →Mae Hong Son night market
~£40
Day 7

Mae Hong Son: lake, hill-top wat and optional trekking

Mae Hong Son

A flexible day. Walk or ride the loop around Nong Chong Kham lake and its Burmese-style temples, climb the 300 steps to Wat Doi Kong Mu for the sunset view, and eat your way through the street-food shophouses. Optional: a self-organised day trek to a Karen village (local guides can be arranged through your guesthouse for roughly 800-1,200 THB), or a long-tail boat trip on the Pai River.

🚌On foot/scooter; optional boat and trek guide paid locally

🛏Garden bungalow resort near the lake, Mae Hong Son

  • →Wat Doi Kong Mu sunset climb
  • →Lake loop and Burmese-style temples
  • →Optional guided day trek to Karen village (~£20-28)
  • →Optional Pai River long-tail boat trip (~£10)
~£55
Day 8

Over the passes to Pai, with the Lod Caves

Mae Hong Son → Pai

Ride east on Route 1095 — hundreds of curves, coffee stops every 20km. Midway, detour to the Lod Caves (Tham Lod) in Pang Mapha: hire a local guide and bamboo raft inside (~£8-12 combined) to walk and float through the limestone chambers, best at late afternoon. Then continue to Pai and settle into a garden bungalow. If you're not riding, the public minibus does this route in about 4 hours.

🚌Scooter ~110km; Lod Caves guide/raft ~£10; or public minibus ~£7

🛏Garden bungalow resort, Pai

  • →Route 1095 scenic mountain ride
  • →Lod Caves walk and bamboo raft with local guide
  • →Coffee and viewpoint stops
  • →Pai Walking Street night market
~£45
Day 9

Pai at your own pace

Pai

The operator gives this day over to relaxing — do the same. Pool day, a £6 traditional Thai massage, hot springs at Sai Ngam (self-ride ~7km, entry ~£1.50), Pai Canyon for sunset, or the Memorial Bridge and Chinese village. Sorted a reputable mechanic if the bike needs a service check. Evening on Walking Street for street food.

🚌Scooter locally; hot springs entry ~£1.50

🛏Garden bungalow resort, Pai

  • →Sai Ngam hot springs
  • →Pai Canyon sunset
  • →Traditional Thai massage
  • →Walking Street food market
~£40
Day 10

The long ride back to Mae Wang

Pai → Mae Wang

Retrace the passes — but consider the 762-curve Route 1095 south to Mae Malai then west on 1263/1013, a genuinely spectacular final ride through forest ridges and hill-tribe communities. Or take the public minibus back to Chiang Mai (~£6, 3-4hrs) and a songthaew out to Mae Wang. Final-night Thai feast at a local restaurant plus a beer by the river.

🚌Scooter ~150km (fuel ~£5); or Pai–Chiang Mai minibus ~£6 plus songthaew to Mae Wang ~£3

🛏Riverside homestay or small 2-3* guesthouse in Mae Wang

Day 11

Back to Chiang Mai and home

Mae Wang → Chiang Mai

Last country-lane ride back into Chiang Mai (~1hr). Return the scooter, do any last shopping in the Old City, and drop into a temple for a final quiet hour. Fly out or continue south — Chiang Mai has direct budget flights and overnight trains to Bangkok if you're heading onwards.

🚌Scooter/songthaew ~£3-4

🛏Not included (departure day)

  • →Final country-lane ride to Chiang Mai
  • →Scooter return and damage check
  • →Old City temple and market wander
~£18

Frequently asked questions

How much does Northern Thailand Loop by Scooter & Local Transport — Self-Launched Version cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £492 per person for 11 days in Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai, Mae Wang, Doi Inthanon, Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son, Pai). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with The Tuk Tuk Club?+

Yes — The Tuk Tuk Club charges around £1,603 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £492 — a saving of roughly £1,111 (69%) per person.

How long is the Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai, Mae Wang, Doi Inthanon, Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son, Pai) trip?+

This itinerary runs 11 days, covering 11 day-by-day stops through Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai, Mae Wang, Doi Inthanon, Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son, Pai).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, road-trip trip through Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai, Mae Wang, Doi Inthanon, Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son, Pai), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
