Self-Launched Pyrenees Winter Walking & Snowshoeing — Spanish Pyrenees

Fly into Zaragoza (Ryanair from London Stansted, or high-speed AVE train from Madrid/Barcelona in ~1.5 hrs). Pick up a hire car from Zaragoza airport — strongly recommended for flexibility in the mountains — and drive ~2 hours north to the Broto or Torla area, the gateway to Ordesa National Park. Check into your guesthouse or rural hotel (casa rural). Grab dinner in the village.

🚌Budget flight to Zaragoza from London Stansted (~£50-90 one way). Hire car from Zaragoza: ~£30-40/day split across travellers. Alternative: Alosa bus from Zaragoza to Sabiñánigo or Ainsa (~£15), then local taxi to Torla (~£20-25).

Your first day on snowshoes. Rent snowshoes and poles from a local hire shop in Torla or Broto (several options available). You can hire a licensed local guide for the day through the Ordesa National Park Guías de Turismo network or via GetYourGuide. The classic route from Torla into the Ordesa canyon on snowshoes is spectacular — sheer canyon walls, frozen waterfalls, and excellent chances of spotting bearded vultures (Lammergeier) and chamois.

Drive east to the stunning Pineta Valley near Bielsa for a different snowshoeing perspective — a wide glacial valley beneath the towering north face of Monte Perdido (3,355m), a UNESCO World Heritage peak. This is a wilder, quieter area. Self-navigate using the free IGN Spain maps app (offline) or purchase a 1:25,000 Editorial Alpina map from a shop in Torla or Ainsa. A guide is optional here on the flatter valley routes.

Head south to the dramatic Sierra de Guara Natural Park — a world-famous canyoning destination that in winter becomes an outstanding hiking area with far fewer visitors. The sandstone and limestone gorges are extraordinary. Base yourself around Rodellar or Alquézar — the latter is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. A guided hiking day can be arranged through local operators in Alquézar.

For variety, drive west to the quieter Hecho or Ansó valleys — among the most unspoilt corners of the Spanish Pyrenees, with traditional stone villages that have changed little in centuries. Snowshoeing here is remote and rewarding. The ascent towards Selva de Oza (a spectacular beech and fir forest) on snowshoes is a highlight. Hire snowshoes locally in Hecho village if needed.

Reaching a high ridge or summit in clear winter conditions with 360° views of the Pyrenean chain is one of the defining experiences of the week. Book 1-2 days in advance.

Alternatively, explore the village of Torla or drive the stunning Bujaruelo valley for a snowshoe or walk without a guide.

Drop the hire car at the airport and fly home.
