Albania is one of Europe's last great undiscovered gems — and it's remarkably easy and affordable to explore independently. This self-launched itinerary follows the same route as Responsible Travel's "Highlights of Albania" small group tour: from the buzzing capital Tirana south to Lake Ohrid, across to the Riviera-like coast, through the UNESCO-listed old towns of Gjirokastra and Berat, and up through Llogora National Park to Apollonia. You'll swap guided coach travel for local furgons (shared minibuses), family guesthouses and self-booked site entries — all for a fraction of the price. Albania is cash-friendly, English is increasingly spoken by younger locals, and the country is safe and welcoming for solo travellers. All costs are approximate estimates per person.

This self-launched version of Responsible Travel's popular Walking in Andalucia tour covers the same incredible ground — Sierra de Grazalema National Park, the Pueblos Blancos, Caminito del Rey, Seville, and El Peñón crag — at a fraction of the guided price. Instead of a private farmhouse package, you'll base yourself in a well-reviewed rural guesthouse or casa rural near Algamitas and self-navigate the same trails using AllTrails and Wikiloc (most are well-marked). Key ticketed experiences like Caminito del Rey and the Royal Alcázar can be booked independently online. You'll use local buses, taxis, and car hire to connect the dots. Andalucía is one of Europe's most rewarding walking destinations — dramatic sierra landscapes, whitewashed hilltop villages, ancient Moorish fortresses, and some of the best tapas on the planet. This self-launched version follows the same Jaén–Antequera corridor as the Responsible Travel "upgraded" tour, swapping Parador hotels for characterful boutique guesthouses and rural casas rurales, and replacing guided walks with self-navigable routes using Wikiloc, Komoot, and AllTrails. You'll still spend your days hiking through olive groves, limestone gorges, and natural parks — you'll just save over £1,500 in the process. The Sierra de Aitana sits just a short drive inland from Benidorm's seafront but feels like a completely different Spain — quiet mule tracks, limestone ridges, hilltop castles, and family-run olive groves. This self-launched version of Responsible Travel's escorted walking holiday gives you all the same peaks, panoramas, and cultural detours at a fraction of the price. You'll base yourself in Benimantell village, renting a room at the same El Trestellador Pension the tour uses (or an equivalent guesthouse), and follow the same day-walk circuit independently using free IGN maps, the Wikiloc app, and AllTrails GPX tracks.
