Essential Tibet Self-Launched: Chengdu to Kathmandu Overland

A self-launched, independent version of G Adventures' 12-day Essential Tibet trip, travelling overland from Chengdu through Lhasa, Gyantse, Shigatse and the Everest Base Camp region into Kathmandu. You'll arrange your own Tibet Travel Permit and Chinese Group Visa through a licensed Tibetan travel agency (mandatory for all foreign travellers — you cannot do this solo), then use local buses, shared 4x4s and the classic Friendship Highway to reach Nepal. Book individual entry tickets to the Jokhang Temple, Potala Palace, Sera Monastery and Durbar Square yourself, take a Tibetan cooking class via a small local operator, and sleep in guesthouses and hostels along the route. Costs are rough backpacker estimates in GBP and exclude the mandatory permit/agency package.
